Claire's Travels
Hi Everyone!
So we have left Cusco and have moved south to Puno. I hate to say it but often when we arrive into these towns and cities there is that slight panic that we are entering a hick town! The only thing keeping you from refusing to get off the bus is that it is mentioned in most of the guide books so there must be something worth seeing here! This was the case when we landed in Puno. Surrounded by unfinshed buildings and rubble for roads we scanned the place for possible tourist attractions...and there it was....Lake Titicaca! We knew we were heading here for a good reason!
With so many people trying to sell you their hotels and hostels, you usually end up at the one with the most persistent seller. Well I can see why this person was desperate to get someone there! The rooms were meant to be 60 soles a night for a double room...we got it for 20 soles. Thats approx 1.80 pound each. Considering this ridiculous price the room wasnt disgusting. It was unsuite with hot water and the beds were comfortable. It must have just been low season.
The people who ran it were pretty helpful too. They organised a boat trip for us the next day to visit some of the island on the lake. It was a lovely early start again. We were picked up at 7am and were on the boat by 7.30am having picked up about 8 others.
Our first stop was Uros - an island made purely of reeds. It was the strangest thing to stand on. It just felt spongy. Approx 15 people live on this island which measures approx 20m x 15m. They make everything out of the reeds - the houses, boats, plates etc.
We were then taken to another island on one of the traditional reed boats. This island also had a school. These reed islands are all located in the smaller part of the lake, which is only about 15m deep.
We then got back onto our boat which was to take us to a larger island called Taquille - unfortunately it was 2.5hrs away. Thank god for the ipod!
Once we were on th island we had to trek for about and hour and a half to get to the top. The views were amazing! The lake is just so blue and still. It looks like a painting. We had a meal at a local restaurant which overlooked the lake. After lunch we walked back to the boat and made our way back to the mainland.
We seem to have a knack of being in a city or town when a festival is taking place. I think that has now happened nearly everywhere we've been! This time it was a childrens festival. We couldn't quite work out what exactly it was for but we guessed different schools had been given different themes. For example, nurses, hallowe'en and the village people...or something similar!
Tomorrow we are moving onto Arequipa....I'll be in touch!
