Claire's Travels
Hi Everyone!
So we are now in Uyuni! We caught a bus last night. Obviously a lot of people are doing a very similar trip to us as we bumped into quite a few people on the bus, who had been on our boat trip on Lake Titicaca. The bus to Uyuni was really nice - we got dinner and breakfast and there was actually heating! A real novelty for us!
We arrived into Uyuni at about 7am and once we had eaten our breakfast of oreos and a box drink we were chucked off the bus into the freezing cold! When you've been on a nice warm bus for 10hrs it is a horrible experience to then be standing on the side of the street realising that all the clothes you have brought with you are never going to suffice.
Anyway, we were told from our tour operator that someone would be waiting for us, holding up a little sign with our names on it. Supprisingly that wasnt the case, so the bus operators had to work out who we were meant to be with. Thankfully it was soon sorted. We found out we were with 2 french guys who had been on the boat trip with us, which was good.
We were taken to an office and were told that we had to be back here at 10.30am as the 4x4 would be leaving at 11am. I would like to point out that it was only 7.30am at this point and Uyuni isnt the most happening of towns. In fact you feel like you've just arrived on some wild west film set. There are roads going in all different directions but they seem to just go on forever and dont really lead to anywhere in particular.
Anyway the french guys...(actually I should really introduce them properly as they will feature quite heavily in the next few journal entries. Their names are Alex and Franck and they have to be the sweetest guys I have met in a long time. They really restored our faith in mankind!!)...suggested that we go grab some breakfast, so off we set into the deserted streets of Uyuni to find somewhere to eat.
We came across a little cafe. Actually cafe makes it sound a lot more glamorous thatn it really was. It was just a room with a few tables. After deciding what we wanted we were told that we could only have bread with jam and tea or coffee because the cook hadnt arrived. So thats what we had but I was a little confused as the locals were tucking into sausages, eggs etc. After finishing our delious breakfast we went up to pay for it but Alex and Franck had already paid and refused to let us pay them back (see what I mean about being sweet!!!)
We then decided to go for a walk to burn off the huge breakfast we had just engulfed. It really is impossible to paint an accurate picture of Uyuni without seeing it for yourself. I have taken some photos but I dont think they quite capture how desserted it felt. For example we walked to the end of one road and suddenly the dessert appeared. All very strange.
Anyway, we killed some time looking in the local shops and just chatting, finding out a bit more about each other. Finally 10.30am arrived and we got into our 4x4. We thought it was just going to be the four of us, but then Sander arrived. A 19 yr old dutch guy who unfortunately had just come from the jungle and so clearly hadnt had the opportunity to wash himself or his clothes.
We set off on our journey, first stopping at the train cemetary. Yes thats right, a train cemetary. Clearly they just cant be arsed to remove them so they have turned them into part of the trip. As dutiful tourists we got out of the car and took some photos. Alex and Franck were a little more enthusiastic and actually climbed onto the top of them to get more exciting photos.
Back in the car, we were travelling for about 20mins and suddenly the salt lakes appeared. It really is the strangest thing to suddenly be surrounded by this bright white ground. It looks a lot like packed snow. We got some good photos but once again Im not sure they will really capture it.
For the rest of the day we stopped at various points which had completely contrasting landscapes. It was so strange to be driving through a desert to then be surrounded by a giant lagoon. I must admit, half the fun was the actual driving to these places. We had managed to steal a tape from one of the other cars which ended up being power ballads e.g. whitney Housten. Unfortunately as we were sitting at the back of the car we couldnt properly hear. Thankfully Alex and Franck were in full swing so we didnt miss a note! I've never laughed so much as they tried to be the first one to recognise the song as it came on!
We arrived at our accomodation around 6pm that night. Thankfully the beds had blankets on them as my sleeping bag was not going to be enough. We had a lovely meal of soup and chicken and chips for dinner, and were entertained by the local children. They sang and played us several songs - although they were all called something different they sounded supprisingly similar, but who was I to question bolivian folk music! During a pause in their playing, Alex picked up the girls guitar and started playing. He tried to get the other boys involved but they werent really having any of it. Alex excepted defeat rather gracefully I thought.
We went to bed quite early, besides being tired there isnt a whole load to do in a village in the middle of nowhere.
