Claire's Travels
Hello once again!
So its the second day of our trip. The day started well - we were told that someone would wake us at 7am in the morning to allow us to have breakfast and then get back on the road. Unfortunately they woke us at 7.40am. Bolivians arent famous for their time keeping.
Back on the road and heading to a volcano and 5 lagoons today. Our driver points out that he has a bag of lollies for us - how great is he! While singing merrily along to Elton and now sucking on one of these lollies (they have bubblegum in the middle of them!) our car starts to slow and splutter and finally comes to a stop. This happens about 6 times during the rest of the day. Franck suggested that the lollies were actually not out of generousity but to keep us content each time the car died.
The views that you see throughout the 2nd day are really breathtaking. The lagoons are amazing! One of the biggest, Colorado, is bright red. This is due to the micro organisms in the water. It looks like someone has just poured ribena into it!!
It's quite a strange trip really because you spend most of your time in a 4x4 and get out for short periods of time to take pictures and admire the views. Don't get me wrong, it's a great way to see a lot of great sites in a relatively short amount of time, you just end up feeling like one of those tourists doing a city tour who stop to take in the major attractions! The locals must think we are really bizarre!
We arrived at our accomodation for the night at around 5pm and thought we had beaten other people to it which was great because our pillows were rubbish and the ones in the bedroom next door were much better, so we swapped them! (seriously it is the little things in life...when you know its going to be around -15 degrees a nice pillow can be a small comfort.) However, we soon realised that no-one else was actually going to be sharing our accomodation because every other group was in the place next door. For no apparent reason our guide had shoved us in an empty area. We were starting to get the feeling that he didnt like us much!
While our dinner was being prepared we thought we would head next door and join in the fun with everyone else....well there's nothing like being reduced back to your high school years when you go to a party and you soon realise that you know absolutely no one and it seems that everyone is staring at you. You gotta love that feeling! I was hoping at the age of 22 I was passed it though! We quickly found a table that had just been abandoned and pretended that we had always been there by eating the crackers they had left. The people on the next table were giving us slightly strange looks but we didnt care...well not much. Unfortunately the people who were originally sitting there returned so we had to move. All in all a completely comfortable evening so far. Thankfully it reached 7pm and it was time to have dinner, so off we trundled back to our 'unique' accomodation.
Very kindly (although I think he had to give it to us as it had probably been included in the price) our driver presented us with a bottle of wine. We decided to be sociable and take it to the other hut. Luckily we found a table again that had been deserted and we settled down with the wine. We grabbed a pack of cards and got playing. May I just say that cards are essential when travelling - always carry them. Anyway as we continued to play, everyone around us seemed to drift off to bed except for another group of french people. We must have been quite loud as a girl came out and had a massive go at us. Alex being the man that he is just pointed to the other group, blaming them for the noise so the girl turned on them. Basically a full blown argument took place while we tried to stiffle our laughs, hoping that the scary girl wouldnt notice us. You possibly had to be there...it really was funny. We decided that it was possibly safer to continue the game in our hut, so that we did until Sander said he had to go to bed. To be fair we ignored his plee for quite some time so we finally had to give in to him.
Off we went to freezing cold beds knowing that we would get little to no sleep and that we were getting up at the glorious hour of 5am...WOOHOO!!!!!
