Ok so after 4 days in Nha Trang (sunbathing and going on 1 boat trip) we made our way down to Mui Ne. Mui Ne was pretty uneventful, we stayed in a beach side room where the bus dropped us off which was cheap (but full of mosquitoes...HUGE ones!!) Enjoyed a few more days sunbathing, the beach was very nice and much quieter than in Nha Trang, although I spied a jelly fish in the sea which put me off swimming a bit!! There were also a lot of jellyfish washed up along the seafront on our 3rd day because of a big storm. So our beach activites were limited to lying on sunbeds...shame :) We left Mui Ne for Ho Chi Minh City on 11th October.
The bus to HCMC took 7 hours (was meant to take 6 but we got a flat tyre...frequently happens!) We arrived in torrential rain and the roads were flooded so when we checked into a random guesthouse we did so by crossing the road up to our knees in water! We visited the Ho Chi Minh City Museum on our first day and the War Remnants Museum. The War Remnants Museum was much more grisly than the City Museum and had lots of depressing photos and some pickled foetuses of deformed babies, the result of the chemical bombs used by America in the Vietnam war. All very harrowing but interesting and the photo displays were really good. We visited the CuChi Tunnels and a religious temple (Cao Dai) 2 days later. The temple wasn't overly great and probably not worth the 3 hour bus trip but the CuChi tunnels were awesome. They've been made a lot bigger to accomodate big ol'westerners like ourselves but it was still a very claustrophobic and HOT experience when we crawled through a 100m tunnel. Saw 2 bats hanging out while we were crawling along...nice! At some points you couldn't see your hand in front of your face, seriously don't know how people lived down them!! Definitely a good place to visit though.
On 15th October we left HCMC to make our way to Cambodia. We opted to go on a 2 day boat trip into Cambodia along the Mekong rather than on a 6 hour bus. Really enjoyed the boat trip...on the first day we visited a few random places, at one place we both had a go at having a python round our necks...had to be done! Poor old python though, he must be man-handled all day every day... Anyway after some other stop offs (for some local music etc) we were put on a bus to Chau Docwhich took 3 times longer than we had been told it would (as ever!) Left early the next morning for the next part of the trip. We were on a 'speed boat' to the border (least speedy boat ever) and our guide sorted our VISA's out for us so leaving Vietnam proved to be much less stressful than coming in!! We then spent another 6 hours on the boat (instead of the 3 we were told it would take) but it was a good experience seeing all the local families and kids waving to you from the riverbank. Better than another dull bus journey!! Finally arroved in Phnom Penh in the early evening and had dinner with a nice couple we met on the boat. Boat trips are definitely good for making friends!! x x x
