On our first day in Phnom Penh we hired a tuk tuk and went to the Killing Fields and the Toul Sleng Genocide museum. The killing fields consists of a few fenced off areas where they found mass graves after the Khmer Rouge killed thousands of Cambodians and the museum has photos of some of the 20,000 people who were tortured there before being taken off to places like the killing fields to be killed/buried. Very unpleasant and hard to imagine that it only happened about 30 years ago. Good trip for us to have gone on though seeing as it was something we knew nothing about...
We left Phnom Penh for Siem Reap on the 18th. Another thrilling 6 hour bus journey! Found a $5 a night room full of dead mosquitoes, cold shower and other such luxuries so snapped that up!! Got a tuk tuk to the Angkor temples the next morning. We paid $10 each for the day but that was overpaying...should have paid much less but hey ho. Visited Banteay Srei and Preah Khan temples amongst others. Preah Khan was our favourite temple, they filmed some of the Tombraider film there we think and it's pretty impressive!! It has huge trees growing on it/through it and is big, in the shade and there weren't many other tourists there...all of which were good things!! Ran around like little kids, took some photos using our self timers, then headed back to our hotel. Met some Irish boys and an Ozzie guy on our way and they informed us that they'd been to the temples in a tuk tuk and paid $4 each. Oops! Anyway we arranged to meet them in the evening and had a good evening out with them, they paid for our drinks which was very nice of them, and we finally got to bed at about 6am. It was a very good night but it did mean we missed the next day at the temples (we paid for a 3 day pass) 'cos we were so tired. We therefore spent our 2nd day in Siem Reap very productively, we watched Little Miss Sunshine on our communal TV and slept A LOT. In order to make up for our laziness we hired bicycles on our 3rd day and cycled the 10km to the temples (it may have been further, not sure!) After getting to grips with our old-skool bikes we made it in one piece (very sweaty and covered in dust) and cycled to Angkor Wat and around the temples of Angkor Thom. Angkor Wat is HUGE so spent a long time wondering around inside there. We'd taken a picnic along to save some pennies so ate that in the grounds of various temples throughout the day then made our way back to town in the afternoon. Cycling around the temples was much more fun than going in the tuk tuk as you can stay in the temples for as long as you like without feeling like you're being rushed and it was definitely good exercise :)
After 3 days in Siem Reap we've now moved onto Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and are waiting to catch out flight to Bali tomorrow. We really enjoyed Cambodia and it's a shame we didn't have longer there...might be somewhere we have to re-visit in the future...;)
Anyway, all is good and we're looking forward to Bali!! KL is great for shopping (very easy to spend lots of money...they even have TopShop here!!) so best go hit the shops now...ha!!
Byee!! Suz and Claire x x x
