Got up early and caught our coach to the Cu Chi tunnels.
The Cu Chi tunnels are a series of passage ways underneath Cu Chi, totalling 250km in length and as small as 60cm by 80cm in places. They were sites of many fmous battles during the wars and they were originally built to fight the French, but they were used more during the American war. Viet Cong soldiers would hide in them for months at a time and use them for surprise attacks and quick getaways against the Americans, most famously they were a big part of the TET Offensive, which was a huge turning point of the war...
The first part of the visit was watching an old video, including lots of footage of the actual war - it was a bit hard to follow but fair interesting.
Next we were taken to one of the concealed tunnel entrances that has been left untouched since the war. If it hadn't been pointed out by the guide you would never see the tiny trap door covered in leaves, we were offered photo's and Dave JUST managed to fit in the hole. If we'd have come here at the beginning of our trip, well that would be a different story!
We were shown some of the vicious traps that were used across the land, some using bamboo spikes, others using metal nails. They would have caused a very painful death to unlucky soldiers standing on them.
There was a BS2 bombcrater amongst the tunnels, which was probably the size of a double decker bus!
The last stop was an actual tunnel that visitors could crawl through, it had luckily been widened slightly to 80cm by 1.2m high. It was 90m long with several exit points throughout. Claire managed 30m and that was enough, but Dave pretending to be macho and brave went all the way to 90m. Definietly not for the claustrophobic.
On the way back we were dropped off at the war museum, which holds collections of photos, weapons and other items from all the wars that Vietnam has had. It was a very sombre atmosphere, especially when seeing real life photos of people before they were killed and the aftermath of massacres.
We didnt manage to see all of the museum as it was going on 4 o'clock and we hadnt eaten anything all day. So we got a suicide taxi (motorbike taxi) through Saigon, which is an experience back to our area for some lunch.
We there booked our Mekong Delta 2 days, 1 night trip to Cambodia for the day after.
