The Further Adventures of Claire
After kaunas and Riga, Frankfurt feels like Manhatten!
Downtown Frankfurt is primarily a financial district, which looks much like wall street, and for the first time since London the people are from a broad spectrum of races and nationalities. So, I really feel like I've come out of the "back woods" and back into the big city.
It was also really nice to say goodbye to all the ice and snow of the baltics. Of course it is not warm in germany by any means, more often thean not it is below freezing and my face is still puffed up from the icy wind...But the sun is shining every day and there are crocus and snowdrops in all the parks. I went to the botanical garden yesterday, and spent some blissful hours soaking in the tulips and daffodils in the heat of the greenhouse. I can't wait until it is that nice outside again!!!
Unfortunately, I came to frankfurt during the wrong time for dance. There are simply no classes to be had or performances to see. The forsythe company is in austrailia, the university is on break, and there are no companies in town performing. So, I'm leaving tomorrow for Köln to look up my friend Slava from ADF. There is a slow train up the river valley that is supposed to give a beautiful view of the country-side on my way to Köln. And maybe I can find somebody who is teaching class while I'm there. You will have to cross your fingers for me.
There simply isn't the same kind of dance classes available here that there are in NYC. Here each company gives class, and the universities have year long programs, but there aren't so many studios that offer open classes every day. It is no wonder that there are so many european dancers studying in NYC. The companies aren't as good, but at least one can really see and do a lot in a little amount of time.
