We set out on our second adventure to pastures new with hopes that there would be no suicide on the railway today. There wasn't. There was however a 15 mintue delay, but eventually we were off.
Nîmes is a very beautiful city with an amphitheatre; unlike Montpellier, which is neither Greek nor Roman. This weekend there's a festival there, so stalls (mainly Spanish themed) lined the streets and the city was crowded with people eating and drinking. There was a bull fight in the amphitheatre which none of us wanted to go to, but we did see a few seconds of it on a television in a bar; enough to make anyone into a Greenpeace activist.
At about 16h00 we stumbled on a huge square with a Pantheon like building in the centre where everyone was drinking wine and listening to a band. We decided to join them and sat on some steps with our plastic cups of (very fruity) wine. We saw three kids (12-15) with cans of silly string/ foam which they were spraying at each other. The youngest then sprayed a woman in the eye as she cycled past, almost causing her to fall off her bike. She got off and blindly shouted at him but he just ran off laughing. A few minutes later they stood behind us and sprayed the remenants of a can on the back of our heads. We turned round and told them to stop it. They did it again. Again 'Stop it'. The third time they used a full can and covered AL. We all got up to remonstrate with them, at which point the smallest tried to snatch AL's bag. All hell broke loose and I ended up throwing my wine (and the glass) at one of them and getting a faceful of foam myself. Luckily there was a group of policemen nearby that we ran to and they managed to catch the would-be thief. It was very satisfying to see him taken away to the police station; ME even took a photo.
We were quite shaken up but we endeavoured to enjoy the rest of the city with some churros, and when we returned to Montpellier later that evening CA and I had our first taste of Montpellier's moules frites. Not the best 24 hours after last night's lecherous weirdo on the tram as well, but I will definitely be retuning to Nîmes.
