After a Friday night dinner of verrines of risotto with foie gras, puréed beetroot and other delicacies, we headed to the 41st best bar in the world (according to a worldwide survey), Papa Doble. A really cool bar but not pretentious judging by the cheer when 5 men dressed as cows walked in. Delicious cocktails too; although my Raspberry Mule doesn't sound quite as sophisticated as their Margaritas.
Saturday GL, CA and I decided to go to Narbonne for the day. Luckily the weather seems to have reverted back to normal so no torrential rain or flooding. It was quite a nice town to wander around, and the cathedral was particularly impressive. There was a canal running through the centre which was quite picturesque and I imagine once the Christmas lights are on it will be really nice to walk along in the evening. One aspect which didn't live up to expectations was the Maison des Trois Nourrices, a monument which the tourist office had specifically highlighted as having a stunning facade. We spent about 20 minutes trying to find it and eventually after walking through a couple of derelict streets we found it. To be honest, the only reason it looked quite nice was because it wasn't falling down like the rest of the buildings around it.
When we arrived back in Montpellier we decided to have an early dinner (well, 7pm), but the only place open was a burger restaurant which actually turned out to be really nice. It was kind of old fashioned American and the meals came in multicoloured plastic baskets with no cutlery. Very enjoyable. After that we went to the opening of the new Town Hall, as there was supposed to be a firework show. When we got there however, we seemed to have just missed the fireworks, but there was a DJ playing in front of the Town Hall to a few thousand people. We walked across the bridge and then found ourselves in an exhibition. I'm not sure what it was about but there were candles and enclosed fires all around a lake. It was really beautiful and people had pulled up chairs, toasting marshmallows or just chatting; with the exception of a few men who were having their pictures taken throwing wood onto the fires. Hilarious.
