Cindy Aserkoff's Travels
We left Rabat for the day long journey to fes, another imperial capital, known for spiritualism. Our 'discovery' today was a spontaneous stop at a roadside stand where chickens, turkeys, juju nuts and dried thyme were sold. We visited Fatima and her modest house where she cooked us fresh scrambled eggs and thyme. We had the opportunity to ask questions about her life and family. After our visit we stopped in meknes for lunch. The history of this city contains the story that the sultan wanted to marry Louis the xiv daughter. But Louis the xiv would not allow it because of poligamy. So the sultan tried to build a replica of Versailles in meknes. It did not work. They also make special iron arts, pots, vases, plates, etc., the are made with inlaid silver and then etched. Back on the bus to visit volubis, the site of roman ruins. In the third and fourth century this was a budding city with a sewage system and fresh water in the residences. Our guide told the story of the ruins as if we were there and we could envision the houses, the streets, the shops, the public square. There were a mosaic tiled floors that are in amazing shape in dining rooms. We could see olive presses in many homes. On arrival in fes, we walked to our riad where we will stay for 2 nights. This like the the Moroccan version of a b&b, owned and run by a family. This riad was built in the 1700's and owned by a Jewish family. That family gave the riad to the current family's grandfather on the condition that when the Jewish family wants to visit from Israel they can stay here. Dinner was cooked and served by the family. All the food, lunch and dinner, has been excellent. Tomorrow is shaking hands with fes.
