Cindy Aserkoff's Travels
Our day started with a visit to the Royal Palace. This a huge compound with residences, schools, administration buildings and a mosque and even a golf course. From there we went to chellah necropolis. We saw roman and muslim ruins. There were winding paths lined with flowers. A woman would throw eggs into an eel pond so we could observe them. Our last stop was the king Hassan mausoleum and tower. The tower was used as a call to prayer and the grounds used as a mosque. There were numerous short pillars that once supported the roof of the mosque until the roof collapsed in an earthquake. For lunch we went to seaside restaurant where we could look out to the Mediterranean sea. We had delicious fresh white fish. After lunch we visited the cemetery of the martyrs.....so many graves on the hillside. We then walked to the casbah. Know the difference between a medina and a casbah? The medina is the wall around the city. Everything outside the wall is called new town. Inside the medina is another walled neighborhood, the casbah. The walls were blue for religion and white for science. Before dinner we were taken to a local bar. We also witnessed a student protest against the government. Protest leaders spoke to us in English and French to explain their issues. For dinner we went to riad, a house that had been converted to a restaurant. A 5 course Moroccan meal was served while local music was played on a kind of lute. The food was excellent. Tomorrow is off to fes.
