Cindy Aserkoff's Travels
Today started with the best breakfast so far cooked by the family, Moroccan pancakes and frittata. Our first stop was to the mellah, the Jewish neighborhood. This neighborhood is noted for the andulasian balconies. During its time it was a significant part of Moroccan culture. Jews in morocco have always lived in harmony with Muslims. They left of their own choosing to go to France for their children's education and also to Israel. We then drove to the panoramic view of the medina. There is no way to describe the size and enormity of this area. There are 9000 alleys! Needless to say, our guide, Mohamed led us thru first street in the medina which was 800 years old and some of the alleys. We saw original crafts such as brass bowls as they were done in the middle ages. Today however, women also perform these crafts. It is very difficult to describe walking around the medina. Pictures to follow although they will not capture the spirit. We visited a tannery where all leather goods are from goats. The leather is amazing including a demonstration of burning and soaking leather jackets. Lastly we visited the place where caftans and scarves are made. Several of us tried them on and modeled for pics. Tonight is a home hosted meal where a Moroccan family will pick us up and takes us to their homes for a family dinner. We were picked up by the brother of our host. He spoke little English and we communicated in French sorta. Our family had 2 children, a boy 8 , and a girl 15. The father was a farmer who harvested olives, cows, and sheep. The farm was quite a large operation. His wife worked as nail, wax, facial person. The husband used to work for an olive exporter but when they were going to lose the family farm he quit his job. The apartment was large. Dinner was prepared by the wife. We dined with the husband who spoke good English. A very nice experience to spend time with a moroccan family.
