Yesterday we went on an organised tour to Litchfield Park, with the company Wallaroo Eco Tours (they are really good and anyone coming to Darwin should definitely consider going on a tour with them!). We were picked up early from our hostel and, once everyone else had been collected, we headed off to the Adelaide River for the first activity of the day - a jumping crocodile cruise! We were really lucky with this because, as the cruise was run by the tour company, we had a private boat all for ourselves, so only 20 people compared to the 50-100 people they pack onto the other cruise boats on the river. After being told that the crocodiles could easily jump up and over the bars into the boat (!) we headed off down the river in search of crocodiles. It only took about 30 seconds to see our first one, and after 5 minutes or so we stopped along the river bank to see our first wild croc up close. The guide had lots of bits of meat to hang off sticks, so we could see the croc moving after it and jumping up in the air - so impressive! We got to see around 10 different crocs in just a few hundred metres of river, mainly females (around 3m long), but we also saw a 4m long and a 5m long male! Getting the crocs to jump out of the water to get some meat isn't actually taunting them, as they do this naturally to get birds out of trees, it was really awesome to see (as well as a bit scary, as they are so quick!). After our cruise we were back on the tour bus and we headed off to Litchfield National Park, which is much smaller than the more famous Kakadu Park but equally as impressive to visit. Our first stop in the park was to see some massive termite mounds built by Magnetic and Cathedral termites - some of them were over 5m high! We then drove further into the park to Wangi Falls where we stopped for our picnic lunch. The falls were really beautiful and it was amazing to see all the water cascading down - apparently we had come to Darwin at the best time of year because, as it's the Wet season, the waterfalls are at their most impressive as there is so much more water in the river system. There was to be no swimming at this spot however, as at this time of year the plunge pool at the bottom of the falls is full of crocs! Our next spot was perfect for swimming though - in the plunge pool at the bottom of Florence Falls! There were 2 waterfalls plunging over a big rock face, and we got to swim in the pool of water at the bottom - it was actually really warm. There were also loads of fish in the pool who had a little nibble at our feet which surprised us a bit at first, but luckily they were pretty tiny. After an hour relaxing by the falls we then headed to our last stop in the park, Buley Rockhole. This was another great spot for swimming, the water flows over little rock faces creating loads of different pools to lounge around in - so relaxing! At this point it was time to head back to Darwin, and as we drove north we came upon a massive thunder storm! It was over by the time we got back to the city luckily, as we were headed for Fannie Bay to watch the sunset with a glass or 2 of champagne - a perfect end to the day!
