We've been in the Top End for a few days now and so far we are really enjoying our time up here in Darwin, although the humidity does get a bit much sometimes (thank god for air con in our room!). We started our time here by booking some activities in and around Darwin, and then we headed off to explore the city centre. Our hostel is only 5 minutes walk from the centre so it's super easy for us to get around. We started off by scouting out whats around us, in Mitchell Street and in the main shopping mall, and we've picked up a couple more souvenirs to take home (we haven't hit our luggage limit yet!). We then wandered down to the waterfront to have a look at the wave lagoon, which we are definitely going to spend some more time at next week, there are some nice looking cafes around there too so it should be a nice spot to spend the day! Then we walked along the coast through Bicentennial Park, which is a really nice shady area with beautiful views over the harbour; we even walked down to Lameroo Beach, just beneath the park, and it feels really tropical! We didn't go onto the sand though as there are hundreds of crocodiles living in the harbour, so we just admired the view from above! For our second day we headed down the road to Aquascene in Doctors Gully, where for $15 dollars we could hand feed the wild fish that come up at high tide. They come in every single day and have been fed for 60+ years - they literally eat the bread right out of your hand, and swim around your feet and try to take a little bite of your toes! We were standing on the slipway as the tide came up, but we had to make sure not to go in any more than ankle deep water as there are really dangerous jellyfish living in the harbour too - so many things in the Top End that can kill you! Today has been the highlight of our stay in Darwin so far - we had a vip tour of Crocosaurus Cove, which is a crocodile park right in the heart of the city. We started off with a guided tour of the reptile house, where we got to hold lizards, snakes and goannas, and then we had a guided tour of the crocodile enclosures. First up we got to feed a massive male croc called Burt - the actual crocodile from the original Crocodile Dundee film! We were just feeding him bits of meat hanging from a stick, but you could really feel how powerful he is when we was grabbing the food! Next we went into the crocodile house where we got to hold and have photos taken with a little baby croc called Fluffy. Then we went behind the scenes of the feeding show, so we got to go into the keeper area just behind the enclosure while they were feeding the big guys - one croc lost a front tooth so we even got to hold that, it was pretty enormous! After the feed show we got to go 'fishing' for baby crocs, where we were basically feeding them bits of meat and they were jumping out of the water to get it - they really can jump very high! We also went to a few of the regular keeper talks, where we saw some snakes being fed and got to see some native turtles up close, so we've had a pretty good day so far - the tour really was worth paying the extra money for as nobody else at the centre got to feed the big crocs! We're now chilling out back at the hostel as a big storm has come in, loads of thunder and rain, although it's reducing the humidity which we can't complain about - we did visit Darwin in the middle of the rainy season!
