I've had to move hostels, and I'm now spending the last two nights of the trip in a sweaty 14 bed dorm with no aircon - and all 14 beds are occupied. What away to see out the trip! It was easy enough making it here from Yau Ma Tei, just 1 change on the metro but it took a while trying to find the entrance. Had to register with the building security and then take a dodgy lift to the 11th floor before getting checked in by the cleaning lady.
I had a rather boring and hot walk around the central area of Hong Kong Island. This is Hong Kong's financial heartland and it was an eerily quiet place. I saw Hong Kong's expo centre and a hideous monument to 'celebrate' Hong Kong's return to China.
I decided to escape the stifling heat by paying visit to the History Museum. It was actually very interesting learning about Hong Kong through time, from Yue settlement to Opium Wars to Japanese Occupation to Chinese reunification. It was a great museum.
I've chilled this afternoon, but in the evening I headed to Tsim Tsha Tsui promenade to see the evening lights show. The Hong Kong Skyline is lit up purple and red to the sound of thumping tunes. It was... a bit disappointing and underwhelming as a show, but the skyline is very cool.
My hostel is close to the epicentre of the protest movement - Causeway Bay. Hence, it was no surprise there was a protest just starting up when I made my way back. It was very peaceful, they always are until the Chinese mafia or HK police turn up. They were chanting in Cantonese, but it was clear the focus was the guy shot in the heart judging by the posters.
It's definitely an experience being somewhere at beginning of a long revolution!
Ciao!
