I took things slightly more chill today and headed to the New Territories. These are the mainland areas further inland of Hong Kong, taking a long metro inland up, almost back at Shenzhen.
I headed to the Wetland Park. An area of reclaimed land, managed for its ecosystem services. Textbook stuff from my lectures last term! The area surrounding very much lived up to the Hong Kongcrete jibe Hong Kong gets, and it was stuffed with annoying kids. But, overall it was an enjoyable visit seeing some lovely birds and getting out of the city!
I did a couple stops on the Ping Shan Heritage trail, but after an underwhelming shrine I decided to take a rest back at the hostel. More enjoyable was my visit to the Temple Street Night Market. Had an epic dinner of dumplings and Chang and really enjoyed wandering Yau Ma Tei at night. This is a really grimey, 'real Hong-Kong' neighbourhood warts and all, cage homes, shirtless sim card salesmen and maseratis dodging fake watch stalls.
Maybe Macau tomorrow?
Ciao!
