Our first full day in Prague today, so after yesterday's experience, we took the safe option and booked ourselves in for a tour of this wonderful city.
The tour was not until 2pm so we had time in the morning to explore the city again in our leisure. We found a great spot and decided to have a beer for Nadeen's brother Craig - happy birthday Craig - so we had our first half litre of beer around 11am - a perfect way to start a day!
We then booked our tour and had some lunch - I had Polish dumplings which were sensational. The tour took in the New Town of Prague and Wencesslas Square, the Prague Castle (which is the biggest Castle in the world), Lesser Town and then a river cruise down the Vltava River. The tour finished up in the Old Town Square - so we certainly got to see a fair bit of the city of Prague today.
On the 3 and a half hour tour, we heard that there was another couple from Australia - they were the first Aussies we have seen or heard since we have been away - so we said hello to them and asked them where they were from - would you believe that they live in Creswick!!!! Fancy being in Prague and meeting people from the same town that I was born in.....even though they were not "locals" from Creswick - they moved there about 6 years ago - it was amazing to meet them - of all the places from Australia they could have been from - they live in Creswick. Anyway, we had a beer with Eva and Malcolm and wished them all the best for the rest of their trip. Tony, you will be happy to know that they know you from the supermarket!!!! So look out when Eva or Malcolm come up to you in about a months time and say they met your lunatic brother in Prague!!!
Whilst on the river cruise, I was casually sitting there having a beer - as you do - and a pidgeon decided to drop its load on me.....I know this is supposed to be good luck, but I am not that convinced!
After the tour, we had another drink or two - have I mentioned how cheap the beer is here????? - and Nadeen tried a local sweet dish and then we headed out for dinner. We both wanted to eat another local dish, so we found a place that served traditional meals. We should have known we were in trouble when after we ordered our meal, they brought another table alongside our table, to get ready to bring out the food......what an experience it was. We ordered a pork knuckle - which was supposed to be about 200g of pork and a mixed meat dish comprising of duck, sausage, ham, pork, dumplings and potato. You should have seen what they brought out!!!!
Suffice to say, we didnt make it through the meal - even though the pork knuckle was very tasty - but it was more like 400g instead of 200g....wait until you see the photo - it was like having a mini roast!!!
Walking back after dinner they put on a fireworks display along the river for us - it was a nice touch for our last night in Prague.....
We have a tip for anyone wanting to visit Prague in the future - which we both highly recommend - make sure you wear flat shoes!!! All of the streets and footpaths here are cobble stone - there is no way you can get around this place in high heels......flat shoes such as thongs or runners are a must.
The only negative thing about Prague is the lack of English signs - all streets and tourist maps are in the local language, so at times it is difficult to find streets - but most shops/bars/restaurants have people who speak English so you get by. It is only a minor criticism and it is a small inconvenience to put up with when visiting this historic place.
Prague is definitely a place you want to visit
