We had our last morning in Prague and made the most of it. We spent the morning shopping, eating and drinking - not necessarily in that order.
Breakfast consisted of cooked smoked ham, with a side of potato, cabbage and bacon, washed down with a half litre of beer - my kind of breakfast!
We hit the shops and then it was time to leave for Amsterdam. We decided to leave in style and booked the hotel car to take us to the airport - which wasnt that much dearer than a taxi and at least you had the knowledge that you were going to get there for a fixed price - and it was a nice Mercedes Benz - so it was the only way to go.
No problems checking in - thanks to Nadeen's wonderful skill in packing! We flew Easy Jet from Prague to Amsterdam - Easy Jet is the discount carrier over here in Europe and they have strict luggage rules. You are only allowed one bag each to check in and the luggage cannot be more than 20kg - our suitcase came in at 19.3kg. Good job Nadeen. We checked in our bags, had a bite to eat and it was time to board our flight. Interesting way of flying, there are no allocated seats, it is first on first seated....so if you want to line up early - which we didnt - you get the front seats, otherwise you take your chance and take what ever seat is available. We managed to get a window seat so all was good. It was a quick flight about an hour and a quarter and we touched down in Amsterdam.
Instead of catching a cab, we decided to be adventourous and catch a train - whilst the train was well signed and it was relatively easy purchasing a ticket - working out what actual train to catch wasnt quite that simple, but still we managed it. They have two classes of tickets here - basically 1st and 2nd class - so we bought the 1st class ticket and it only cost us 6 euro each to get into the centre of Amsterdam. First part of the trip successfully negotiated.
After getting off at the correct station, we had a choice to make - turn left or right to go over the bridge to find our hotel - yep, you guessed it, we went the wrong way! We must have looked like typical lost tourists as two very nice young Dutch women stopped us and asked us if we needed any help - it turned out we were walking in the wrong direction!
Still, all good, we turned around and made our way to our hotel - the Amrath Hotel - and after a little confusion at check it, we were shown to our room. It is a grand old hotel centrally located and despite a cool reception, we should enjoy it. I know one thing we are going to enjoy and that is the mini bar - all complimentary!!! Gin, Scotch, Rum, Beer, Wine, softdrinks etc - they refresh the mini bar every day - so guess what, we are setting ourselves a challenge to empty it the two days we are here!!!!
We had a meal around the corner from our hotel and then took a walk around the Red Light District - interesting place to say the least!!!
Even Nadeen was impressed with some of the offerings.....although we did just window shop! The place is crawling with tourists and what appears to be hundreds of guys - who obviously come here in droves. Bars and strip clubs are plentiful and despite everyone appearing to drunk, there is no trouble. The Red Light District is surrounded by the various canals and is certainly a tourist magnet for this City
Our first impressions of Amsterdam are that it is full of bikes and canals - tomorrow we will take on a canal cruise and see what else this city has to offer - although time will be against us and we may not get to see the Anne Frank House or the Van Gough Musuem.
