Up and about early today as we said our farewells to London and caught a train to Heathrow for our flight to Prague.
We left the hotel around 7am and just managed to miss the peak hour traffic on the underground to catch our train to Heathrow. We enjoyed our time in London, but it was time to move on.
We managed to find our way to Heathrow, check in and find our gate lounge no problem. After a short flight - about 1.5 hours flying time - we arrived in Prague. Again, no problems with luggage or finding our way to our hotel. After stopping at the local tourist information centre, we decided that we would take a chance on a local taxi and head to our hotel. It was about a 20 minute cab ride - and you knew straight away we were no longer in Melbourne - left hand drive, driving on the right side of the road and a driver with broken English - it all adds to the adventure.
Anyway, despite us not having a clue where we were going, or in fact if we were being taken the right way, we arrived at our hotel. The tourist information person said it should cost us about 25 euros in a cab and the guy charged us 28 so I was happy about that!
We checked into our accommodation - the Mamaison Riverside Hotel - and unpacked. We then walked along the river bank of the Vltava River and headed for the Charles Bridge - for those of you who watched the Amazing Race, this is the bridge that was filmed during one of the scenes here in Prague - it is an amazing bridge which leads you to the old city of Prague.
It was easy to get around and again, there are lots of tourists here. After walking over the bridge, we decided we needed to have something to eat and were looking for a local delicacy. We spotted a woman who looked like she was making a local delicacy - unfortunately she was using some flour dough and there was a swarm of wasps hanging around her whilst she was kneading the dough - Nadeen asked me if the wasps were part of the local dish as they were being cauught up in the dough!!!
We went to a local ATM machine and took out some local currency - CZK - you can use either Euros or Czech money here - but we decided to use the local money. The ATM dispenses 2000 note denominations!!!
Prague is known as the City of Hundred Towers, however Nadeen thinks it is the City of Hundred Jewellery shops!!! There are jewellery shops everywhere - she loves it....amber and garnet stones.
For me, forget the jewellery shops, you can buy half litre beers here for just over 1.35 euros!!!! - and the beer tastes great - Pilsner. I think I am going to like this place.....
After our afternoon walk we returned to the hotel, got changed and then went out for dinner - it was time to taste the local specialities - goulash!
I had a beef goulash and Nadeen chose a pork dish. We dined outdoors in one of the town centres whilst listening to a person playing the violen - outdoor dining is huge over here. The dinner was nice, washed down with a couple of beers, and it was time for more exploring.
The actual town square of Prague is quite large - surrounded by cafes, restaurants and bars. You would certainly never go thirsty or hungry over here!
As I said previously, there are tourists everywhere - from all nationalities - we havent bumped into any other Aussies yet - not sure if that is a good or bad thing. It still facinates me listening to all of the different languages people speak over here - you have to be very talented to work in the tourism industry over here as you would need to know several languages.
We walked back to our hotel - which is about 15-20 minutes from the town square - hoping to stop in at a local pub - but we chose to head back to our hotel for a drink instead - much to our horror, the bar was closed - probably a good thing in hindsight - we will be fresh for tomorrow!!
