Smarties travels
Hey guys, i'm now right up in the north of Vietnam in a little place called Sapa. I arrived here yesterday with Tony and Angus after catching the night train from Hanoi. When we got here the weather was great, it was misty around the top of the mountains but it was warm. We hired motorbikes for the day and went off in one direction, stopping every 10 minutes to take another picture of the scenery. It wasn't untill we picked up some villagers on the back of our bikes to take them to their village that our day got really interesting. We were invited into the village by the people we picked up and had to ride our motorbikes over the rickity old bridge that you can see in the picture, every so often there was a plank or 2 missing in the bridge and i thought the bike would go straight through with me on it (imagine trying to explain that to the hotel we hired the bikes from!). Inside the village the children were a bit shy to start with but after a while they saw what big kids we were and started to really have fun. We swam in their river (which was bloody cold to start with, not good for the old manhood!) and then angus tried the fish they just caught (the fish came out of the water, they pushed the fishes mouth through it's ass with a stick and put it on a fire... you don't get fresher than that sainsbury's!) and then we just played and took pictures of the villagers all afternoon. On the way back from the village night set in before we were even close to our hotel, riding our bikes at night through mist and rain was not that nice, and with the sun down it got cold.. very cold!! I even had to swerve out of the way of a jeep coming the other way and had to put my foot down in the biggest puddle of mud and water, not plesent! Today has been a bit of a wash out, it's been pissing down all day!! we even had a thunderstorm at about 9 this morning which knocked all the power out for about 3 hours so i went to the market and bought a lined coat and a wooly hat with ear warmers (pictures will be on the site soon) for less than 6 pounds... cheep as chips!! We should be sorting a treking trip for 3 days and 2 nights tomorrow, checking out all the little villages and hill tribes around this area and slleping in the villages in the evening which sounds really good, after that we head up to China for next part of my little adventure. Speak to you all soon. Christopher
