Arose early on the 6th April 2008 for an epic day at the office. First to arise was Luke and James as it was skydive time. After the toilet had taken a beating we said our fairwells and off they went. Whilst Luke and James went off in a plane the rest of us rolled into Puzzling World. This place was mental. Freaky illusions all over the show that you just couldn't get your head around. Also had loads of little games to play that had you feeling like you were back in playgroup and just as stupid. Wacky place! After puzzling world it was off to pick up the dare devils. The grins on the face said it all. Luke and James both said it was an amazing experience and an enjoyable one. Soo much in fact that there is talk of another one!
After we had been reunited it was off to the next task. Bungy jumping. Big bus ride through the mountains as all sat in their seats i-pods on and getting in the zone. We had been waiting for a while to get these started. Pulled into Karawau Bridge and it was time to get the wallets out. The Thrillogy team would be Luke, Matt, Tom the Welsh chap and Chris. Credits cards back in the pocket and it was no messing around. Straight up onto the bridge and harnessed up it was Andy to get his out the way. No hesitation apart from the package in the back of his pants and it was Luke's turn. Now asking to be dunked he thought a mere head wetting would be sufficient. However the bungy guys had a different idea and a fall blown dunk, with slap of the water followed. Up next was Matt who just wanted a water touch. Before you knew Matt had nearly lost his T-shirt he was that far in the water. After a few more candidates had gone Chris stepped up wanting a water touch. However it was a no deal despite some effort to slap it. First bungy jumps done.
After all feeling more than ready for the evening out it was time to get into Queenstown. pulled into one of the most picturesque towns we had ever seen with mountains and lakes everywhere. Magic. Pulled over for our big Kiwi bus photo and some banter before checking into Base hostel for the week. We practically had our own room which was handy! All ready for a night out the Thrillogy boys had one last thing to do. Get themselves upto the ledge for another bungy. A gondola ride to the top, and Luke on his third extreme sport of the day (naughty) we were greated by an amazing view, over 300m above Queenstown. Although this bungy wasn't that much bigger it was dusk and no crowd was present for the cheer on. Not to fear we got ourselves checked in, strapped up and chucked ourselves off the edge of that bad boy. No messing around. All seriously pumped up by this point we headed back to town to get the glad rags on. It was going to be a big one.
Everyone from both Kiwi buses that we were travelling with got themselves down to the bar for a half 8 meet. Some ckeeky drinks to get the night started and it was clear the egg chasers (rugby boys) were setting the pace. However team LDN showed them how to keep it lit and it was off to the World bar for some T-Pots (the champagne ones were not the nicest). After a superb night where Matt had his hi-tecs on we retired to the room. Andy a little worse for wear was awoken when Chris rolled in. He then made the error of jumping off the bunk bed a catching his forhead giving him a slot machine appearance. Never a good one. As Jack then took him to the toilets Andy rounded it off by doing his champagne impression on Jack. Nice!
Wednesday we woke up early for a good story time session and realised just how good the night before was. After a well deserved lay in, we hadn't had one for ages we got ourselves out and about. The egg chasers bought a new rugby ball for a quick chuck around. And generally chilled out day then boys got ready for another evening out. However with Nevis in the back of their minds (our final 134m bungy) we kept it reasonably quiet. A few in the altitude bar, then buffalo and the world bar to finish off. A mixed night sleep with interuptions followed before our early start the next day.
Thursday it was up early early to get ready for bungy. A quick shower and it appeared that morning would be banter free. The Thrillogy boys set off for breakfast (a quiet affair) before sitting in the bungy centre for another 45 minutes. Really just wanted to get it under way. Finally it was time to set off for Nevis on a 45 minute bus ride containing some serious off roading up the side of a mountain. I-pods still in we finally arrived ready to put this bad boy to bed. Harnessed up and weighed in (we all swear the scales are lying) we headed off in a little cable car to the pod. Tom, Matt and Luke all went first with Chris following about 10 behind. None of us hesitated. All of us loved it. It had been such an amazing feeling doing the thrillogy and def one to tell the grandkids. It's not everyday you just throw yourself off some s***ty little platform and fly for 134m. Simply undescribable to those who haven't. Incredible. All back on safe land, more pumped then ever if not slightly releaved we headed back to Queenstown and a couple of cheeky beers. We felt we had earnt them! Another absolute mental night on the tiles in Queenstown, which led to someone getting a sneeky can of shaving foam decorated on top of them we had hit the sack. It had felt like a marathon of a day!
Friday and once we all had rolled out of bed and had a bloody good laugh we minced around town. Decided that it was time to get our team T-Shirts done. Our own design with nickname on the back Team Testosterone was kitted out. We had Tommo (Tom), Millman (Andy), Jackson (Matt 'Colin Jackson' Hamer), Lovett (James), Lucas (Luke), Yogi (Jack) and Boo Boo (Chris). After a warm up in the room it was yet another one on the streets of Queenstown. A random night of fun but a bloody good one. Really loving Queenstown.
Another lazy morning and there was a split decision for the days activites. The egg chasers decided they wanted to go watch a rugby match whilst Luke, James and Chris decided they needed some pampering. It was off to the spa for a sexuality questioning day. After being picked up by mini bus we went off into the mountains to a brand spanking new spa. We had our own room with a deep jacuzzi, walk in shower, retractable wall / roof and more importantly a lock on the door. As soon as Lovett returned from doning his trunks and Marvin Gaye 'Lets get it on' was playing over the speakers the scene had been set. We all popped it into a perfect temp spa to be greated by amazing views of a mountain and a river with what felt like we were sitting outside. All this travelling is hard work! After some photos that will never make the light of day we were all incredible relaxed and feeling camper than Dale Winton on Christmas Day. After our bonding session we went back into town for a spot of shopping before a wonder to the lake. They don't come more relaxing than that! After a hard day the lads treated themselves to the cinema to see the Iron Man before retiring. Epic.
Sunday and it was up at a reasonable time for a training day. Jack having opted out stayed at Base whilst the other six popped it into Dr Bike to get there hands on some err bikes. Some Specialized hardtails were on the menu and having not legitimitly ridden bikes since they were 17 (apart from Luke in Thailand) we set off (yes Mum's with helemets). It was a brisk 8km ride out of townto the start of the 'intermediate' course and with ten minutes in the guys were all blowing out of their arses. This was supposed to be an ok ride however with hills like cliffs we were all giving it some rather blue language. Heads down however we plodded on for what felt like an eternity and finally reached what we thought was the start of the track. 2 minutes in however and we realised we had taken a wrong turn . What followed was a mixture of pushing the bikes up a hill and carrying them. There was no riding. When we finally came to what looked like tracks we all collapsed. Rather pissed off and feeling like we had dropped a clanger moral was low. However within 5 minutes we were bombing around some awesome off road mountain bike tracks, doing jumps and weaving in and out of trees. This is what we had wanted. It was incredible fun. Having done a number of tracks we finally came out in carpark where we were supposed to start. Classic. A brief drink from the pure water lake and we decided to hit a few more courses. Some more banter and it was time for our final decent down Grin and Holler 2. Feeling slightly more confident we hammered it down the course and all came out unscathed even if Chris did get a bit cocky and put it straight into a bush (which he would have got away with if Luke had not spotted him). However it was tears of laughter running down there faces which would have been different if it had been a tree. Classic. All having had a lot of fun we then set off for an even harder journey home. A lot of pushing of the bikes up hills and some extreme saddle sore setting in we finally rolled back into Queenstown. A quality day even if it was hard work. No pain no gain. That night , having worked hard we rewarded ourselves out with another big night. A great night out and a late one. After we had hit our usual destinations it was time to go and watch Man U win the league. (Paul i won't brag too much yet but I was thinking of you - love Chris!). A bloody late one.
Monday and it was time for our last day in Queenstown and time for the biggest sporting event of the year. The Team Testosterone Luge Off. Some of the boys packing more weight than others appeared to have the bookies backing. However after we realised Bears don't like heights the number one contender was out. After a warm up begginers course everyone got their game faces on. Now there may have been rumours that we are all good friends but what followed was 5 laps of all out war. The highlights of the encounters were Luke showing Millman how to eat gravel (and a fence if there had been one), a Luke, James and Chris threeway which saw more overtaking than the A1 and Chris nearly showing James the Grim Reaper. Luke 'Lucky' Purchase kept his arse in front for that one. The final highlight was where 'Yogi' (Jack) and 'Boo Boo' (Chris) headed for a single lane bit of track side by side. Weighing in at nearly 8 stone more than Chris, Jack soon found himself being clipped over the edge and off the course. Always the underdog. Such a good laugh as we're sure you can see from the photos. There is rumours of a better one in Rotorua so watch this space! After a big sporting event it was down to the bar for a quiet one. For Andy, Matt and Chris however we went all out. A pants on fire night and great to say goodbye to Queenstown. Possible the best place on Earth.
The next morning we all got up and said our fairwells to Tom. He hasn't had to much of a mention but he was part of the Thrillogy, lived in our room and was one of the lads. Bloody great guy and we were gutted not to be taking him with us. As we said Queenstown had everything. The thrills, the spills, the adventure, the scenary, the people and the fun. How will it be topped?? Whilst in Queenstown we also said goodbye to our driver Kane. He had been an absolute legend. Looked after us well and had some great banter with him. Hero. Our bus journey out of Queenstown was a long one. It was also a quiet one. All gutted to have left and after a pretty standard day we got back to Christchurch. A few hellos to some boy's from Oz who we tore Byron Bay up with and some goodbyes it was off to the airport for what felt like the end of something. Not to fear though we're off to the North Island and Wellington where we are determined to make it amazing. That's just how we roll!
