Day 29 .... Where to start... what a journey. First off, phone had died before getting in train. The train (an old rikerty 1970s Serbian sleeper train i should add, fake wooden panels and brown suede upholstery) had no AC outlets to charge up. This wasn't a major issue, only an inconvenience, until I realised I didn't know how to get to the hostel from the station. Secondly, the guard took my interrail ticket without explanation and I didn't get it back until arriving at Belgrade, 9 hours layer. Thirdly, as this was my first venture out of the EU (train went through Croatia), had Passport checked 3 separate occasions (entering Croatia, leaving Croatia, entering Serbia) by armed border patrol. On the plus side, had a whole 6-person sleeper cabin to myself, and got my first stamps in my passport! Anyway, arrived in Belgrade at 06:15 this morning don't know where imaging and can't find an AC outlet in the station to charge my phone. So i ask a cab driver if we speaks english. He nodded, not a good start. Asked him if he knows of, and can take me to my hostel, Belgrade Central Hostel. He says yes. Game on. 15mins later we arrive at Spirit hostel on the outskirts of town. Not my hostel. He's taken me to a Hostel in central Belgrade... but not Belgrade Central Hostel. Great. I so ok, not a problem, can you take me to the town centre. Thinking I'll be able to find it myself, or at least get directions. He's not happy. Another 10 minutes and we pull up at another hostel. Hedonism Hostel, still not my hostel. Brilliant. So I tell him this is fine, he looks really chuffed. Luckily, the guy in Hedonism hostel was up (bearing in mind this is 7am), spoke english, let me charge my phone, gave me a map and directions. Eternally thankful to this man. Eventually walked to my hostel. Which wasn't making out road names from an English tourist map when the road names are in Serbian and they use a different alphabet! Checked-in. Room to myself. Got a few hours sleep. Walked round the town. Went to the fortress that looks out over the city. Just ruins left now pretty much but some re-development had been done in the grounds... tennis courts and basketball courts in fact! Took a stroll, which turned into a 1.5 hour walk to Ada Ciganlija which is Belgrades 'Seaside'. Really it's pebble beaches either side of the Danube River. Nice though. Popular. Caught some rays. Bus back into town. Got some food and local Serbian ice cream. Early train to Sarajevo tomorrow... directions to hostel are sorted!
