Left Melbourne on Friday morning and headed to Cats work with her where I was going to get a taxi to the airport which was minutes away. After an emotional farewell I headed to the airport and checked in for my flight to Auckland where I was flying to catch my flight to Nadi, Fiji. The flight was at 11.35am.
When I arrived into Auckland I felt like id just arrived back in Edinburgh as it was raining cats and dogs!!! Jumped in the shuttle bus and had an early night for my 5am pick up from the hotel and 7.10am flight the following day. The excitement soon went when an Aussie on the bus who I was speaking to decided to tell me not to go anywhere alone as Fiji was so dangerous!! CHEERS LOVE!!!! At the airport I spent my time looking for yet more souveneirs for Chloe then headed to the departure lounge to have a cuppa and chill.
My flight to Nadi was only 3 hours which was good and the fact I had a whole row to myself was great. Arrived to mega heat, also good haha. After taking a while to get through customs etc and dealing with a broken suitcase I met my bus driver and was off to the resort where I was staying. It was so nice and the people were fab, all very friendly. Once I had dumped my bags I put on my bikini and got right out onto the beach, which was about 5 steps from my Bure door!!! I had a beach Bure which was so nice, totally Fjian. The sun came and went but it was just so nice lying there chilling out. The resort seemed dead as the floods in January have seemingly put a lot of people off travelling to Fiji ,but I wasnt complaining!!! Later I had a swim in the pool then headed in a taxi to Nadi town to check it out there. The town was full of Fijians so I stood out a mile. I had a wee wonder and then headed back to the hotel for dinner. I spent some time talking to the staff and learning some Fijian words!!
I thought id head back to my room and have a nice shower and a chilled night with my book!! Yes my book!! I actually started one of the books Wendy gave me, I finally had time to chill and enjoy it!!! My chill time soon went when I doscovered the biggest spider ever in the shower!! I thought id killed it to later find it the following day lol.
I set my alarm for the following day as its hotter first thing and I wanted to sun bake!!! Lucky I did as by lunchtime it was pouring down like youv never seen in your life.
The saturday morning I was starting my tour of the main Island. I was being picked up from a nearby hotel at 8.15. There was 16 of us on the tour. People from all over. I became friendly with a few people from England straight away, they were lovely. Our guide was Cam who was fab, totally camp as christmas. Our driver Alvin was also a great guy. Our first stop was Nadi town and the market. We had to buy sarongs to cover our legs as we were going to be visitnig a few residential aras and it was respectful to do so.
We then headed to the 7th best beach in the world Natadola Beach where we sunbathed and then had a BBQ. After that we headed to Malomalo village where we got to witness village life. We learnt more Fijian words and met some of the community. It brought a tear to my eye. We then headed to the Sigatoka Sand Dunes where we had to climb to the top of this huge hill with boogy boards and slide down head first!! Oh the joys. I was crapping myself but did it, was covered in sand by the end. Had sand in places I never thought it was possible lol. Afterwards we headed to the resort where we were staying Mango Bay Resort, where we were sharing a 20 bed dorm ahhhhhh!!! Although I was very surprised when we arrived as it was actually ok, I bagged the bed at the door which didnt make it too bad lol. Check out the pics. We joined some of the staff and other guests in a tradional Cava ceremony which happened everywhere in Fiji. Cava is basically like dry herbs which is mixed with water and is then drank. It gives an alcohol affect and totally numbs your tongue!!!It was so nice as during the ceremony the sun set and the views were amazing. I hated the cava, it looked like watery mud!! I kind of made it obvious when it was my turn to drink it, as you can imagine, me being Miss Dramatic afterall!!!!!
That night we were had a shower in the nice brown water and had dinner, there was entertainment in the bar. The food in Fiji is amazing!! They had a group from a local school who were all dressed up and did Fijian dances and sang songs, it was so touching!!! They then got everyone up and we did the conga to the venga bus song, what a laugh!!!! I was so amazed the next morning that I had managed to sleep in a huge dorm, I was well proud of myself!!!
Day two of the tour we jumped abouard our lovely green Feejee experience bus and headed to the Namosi Highland for a 3 hour trek!!! A few of us didnt have suitable footwear so opted out haha, we were planning on sunbathing on the long boat whilst waiting for the others. However it didnt quite work out that way as it poured down!!! We all got into a huge 4x4 truck and headed up the highlands, on the way picking up and dropping off locals and dropping them off at the church as they all must attend church on a sunday or they are punished!!!! After sitting around for hours waiting on the others we had lunch then were all given a tube to float down the river in. After that we had the chance to jump off waterfalls into the water. I think I got a bit carried away with myself as after a few jumps I felt like a could conquer the world and ended up jumping off this high ledge, which I would never have normlally done!! Anyway the current was so strong that it carried me away, I swear I thought I was going to drown!! Eventually one of the Fijian guys had to come to my rescue. Needless to say I wont be doing that again!! We then boarded the longboat for what was meant to be a relaxing trip back, however it was pouring down and we were all freezing after being in the water!! We were in our element to get back to the house where we had left our dry clothes!! That night we were staying at a lovely resort where a specially made hut had been built for Feejee experience with 20 beds!!! AHHH!!! I treated myself to a head and neck massage on the beach then we all chilled in the rain before dinner, which again was gorgeous!!!After a few vinos I headed to bed.
Day three we drove through Suva which is the capital of Fiji and seen the sights there. After that we drove to a local school. It was totally heartbreaking. When we arrived children started to cling to certain people and we got a wee tour around the school ground and their dorms. It was so basic but the children all continued to have a huge smile on their faces. At the end they sang us a song and miss emotional started crying. One of the girls had to give me her sunglasses as I got so bad!!!! The girl who escorted me gave me her address as she wanted me to send her the pics I had taken. Overall it was a highlight however so sad to see how they live. From there we headed to visit Wailotta village where we visited the chiefs home and took part in another Sevu Sevu ceremony with the cava. I was the chief for the group so had to be the first to drink some!!! It was a struggle to keep a straight face, then much to my disappointment we had to drink another ahhhhhh!!!!!
Feeling mega hot we then happily headed to a river in the village to play team games and have a Bilibili rafting competition, which some of the locals joined in with. It was such a laugh and we won!!!!!That night was our last night on tour and we stayed at Voli Voli Beach in the north. The hotel had arranged games for us which was fab. What a laugh. Instead of the egg and spoon we did the stone and spon, we also played over and under and did forfeights for the losers. We all felt like we were at school but were lapping up the free drinks for the winners!!!! Our guide and a guy from the hotel, also as camp as christmas put on a wee show for us it was hilarious!!!
After burning lots of energy on the dancefloor we thought it would be a fab idea to hit the pool. It was a great way to end a fab day. Day four we had a later start 12 o colck!! So we hit the beach and did some sunbathing and kayaking. We then headed to the Indio Fijian area where some of the guys had curry I opted for an omlette!! We got to make Roti bread which was just flour and water, which tasted fab. From there we headed to do the thing id been most looking forward too, the Sabeto mud pools!! At first the feeling of the mud as you stood into the pool was very weird!! Most of the girls were very dramatic haha. But once we got in it was a right laugh. After being totally covered in mud we then enjoyed dipping in the thermal pools, which felt like getting into a very hot bath. We got rid of all the mud then headed for the journey back to the hostel the guys were staying in once the tour had ended. Everyone shared an 8 bed dorm so I managed to have a shower and get organised for the airport. We then all headed out for our last dinner together, another few who were staying elsewhere also joined us. After dinner I headed to the airport for my 11pm flight to LA. As I got settled on the plane I was mega chuffed to realise I was on a row of three with just one other lady so we had a spare seat yeahhhh!!! She was living in Mexico and was a missionary so spent some time telling me all about it!!! After the meal had came through I decided to take half of a sleeping tablet which a guy had given me and assured me id defo get a good sleep!! He wasnt wrong I reaslied 7 hours later when I woke up when we were shortly arriving into LA!!!
