I was working back on the high risk delivery ward today with midwife Kristina. Kristina had joined us in Cardiff for a month back in September as part of the TALK project. We started the day at 7am on the ward. Kristina was on duty for answering the phone calls today. They have labour assessments, labouring women, high risk inpatients and induction of labours all on their delivery suite so the volume of calls coming through is quite high - therefore one midwife is allocated to this. I spent that time talking to different midwives and doctors about their protocols, how and what things are different and similar. I find these discussions really interesting and I learn alot.
There was a TALK conference being held at 9-12 which myself and Kristina went along to. Sigrun was faciliating the presentations. Although everyone spoke in Norwegian so I was unable to understand exactly what they were saying, some of the words are very similar to English. With some addtional help in translation from Kristina I understoof what was being said. The presentations were being held from TALK 'champions' in different areas of speciality, ie. Cardiology, ITU, ambulance service, main recovery etc. Each area was sharing how they had attempted (successfully and unsuccessfully) to implement TALK debrief into their area of work. I found this really useful as I tired to identify what our potential barriers for implemenation could be and how these could be overcome.
I am writing reflections for the TALK project while I am here and I have a few ideas as to how TALK could be implemented into maternity so that it is effective and sustainable. These I will discuss with my Head of Midiwfery, Suzanne Hardacre, the clinical goverance team and midwives in the clinical area to see if these ideas are achieveable.
I spent the rest of the afternoon on the ward, shadwoing and speaking to different midwives. After work, I headed out for another long lake walk before it started to heavily rain again. Tomorrow I had another day on the high risk maternity ward - hopefully I would get to shadow a midwife during labour care if possible.

MARIA ROBERTS I’m looking forward to catching up with you so we can pool our ideas to take TALK forwards in the Health Board!
