I started my day with a 3 mile walk around the Mosvatnet lake. It was still dark but I had all my reflective gear on so I felt safe. There were lots of people running/ walking around the lake at that time. The sun started to break through towards the end of my walk revealing a beautiful sunrise.
I met Sigrun in the main lobby and we went to collect my ID badge for my work in the hospital maternity unit tomorrow. We stopped for some lunch and had a long conversation about their success with simulation training. I was so impressed by the training day yesterday and we were chatting through what worked well. Sigrun sent me some interesting research articles regarding successful simulation training, and informed me that in Stavanger, they had some of the best training for stroke patient care in the world. Some of these principles of training are generic so can be easily applied to any aspect of care with the right facilities.
In the afternoon, I met with two master students who were auditing the use of TALK debrief in clinical practice after this had been discussed and demonstrated through their training days. There was a consent form to be read and completed by the staff member and then a questionnaire regarding the use of TALK which was led by the masters student. The issue they have at present is an electronic diary has recently been put into place so this has over shadowed the implementation of TALK slightly. The main thing is staff were aware of TALK. They also have ‘leaders’ of TALK in the clinical areas so they can encourage the debriefs to take place. These can happen at any time for any situation, and don’t need to take very long (in some situations 10 minutes). They can use the TALK tool to complete the debrief and move on without it having an impact on care provided.
I spent the rest of the day reading articles and writing some reflections on my time here so far. I’m looking forward to my first day on the maternity ward tomorrow!
