My Family Travels
Wow! Last day in Rome! These two weeks went so fast. I am ready to go back home, but totally not ready to leave Rome. Ending class was very bittersweet. We got some pictures of the class. I got pretty sad. We ended class on such a great note. We all sat in a circle and talked about the traditional Italian holidays. Then we talked about all our traditional holidays. All in Italian! We had so much fun just talking. I think our teacher enjoyed herself very much. Everyone seemed a little sad once the bell rang. I can't believe how much I felt that I learned in 2 weeks of class. I almost wish I could have taken 2 more weeks of class to get a better handle on the language. I loved that added dimension of my trip. I got to learn something while I was on vacation. After class we gathered in the garden one more time. Some went to go last minute shopping and some, like Jeremy and I, got food. We also decided to get wine. What a great deal! We went to the same enoteca that we had our wine tasting. I ended up getting 3 bottles of the amazing red that we had tasted. The best part was the price, 6 Euro! Everyone got a few bottles of something. Then Jeremy and I went back to pack up. That was a whole lot easier than I thought. We both had plenty of room in our bags, even after we wrapped up the wine! Then it was on to our last tour - Facist Architecture. Many thought that this tour would be boring. Our guide was so excited to take us. There was going to be no tourists! I ended up loving this tour. The first half was to see the very symmetrical useful shapes of Fascist architecture. I loved the look of this. It was such a change from the overly ornate features of the basilica. I am also a very symmetrical person. All the buildings had a ton of windows. Both sides of the road were mirror images. It was actually a call back to some ancient architecture. There was a building that looked just like the Colosseum, but on a smaller scale. I had a lot of fun trying to take artsy pictures. Then we took a super hot bus to go to the Garbatella. This is a cute housing area. They first started building a little apartment-like building that had green space. But by the end they built these huge building which were nicknamed hotels, because that was pretty much what they were. This area was so quiet and quaint. I love love loved walking through this area. The people in one area took such great care of their property. It was exactly what I imagined an Italian living area to be. I took some great photos in this area. Then on the corner of via Michelle :-) we left our guide. We really liked Alessandra. She knew how to be a good guide, although she walked a little fast. For supper we decided to stay near our piazza Bologna. Max had seen a place earlier that looked nice. Here we ate our last Italian meal. Sad. We called this our transition meal - back to the States. The menus had a picture of the Statue of Liberty on it! Too funny. What another great meal! I started off with bruscetta! I am going to miss those amazing tomatoes. I ended my Italian experience with a pasta with vodka sauce. It was so tasty! So many of us were so full, that Jeremy ended up eating the leftovers of 3 people! Laura also joined us here. For dessert we split a very yummy sparkling wine that we had received as a gift from the enoteca! What a way to end! When we were done, a bunch of us went down to piazza Bologna to finish off with some beer. Such a great way to end. Great atmosphere with great friends. None of us wanted to leave, but we knew we had a long day of travel ahead of us.
