My Family Travels
This day started a heat wave in Rome. Before our cooking class we had an appointment at the Borghese gallery. We could have used a nap, but Max was so excited that we wanted to go. This was an amazing gallery of Bernini statues. Thankfully I stuck with Max who explained a lot to me. Bernini was a very Baroque artist. It was amazing to look at the statues and remember they were made out of marble. There was a woman on a bed and the pillows/bed looked comfortable. The statue of David looked like he was about to throw the stone. Hades had a hold of Persephone - you could see his hands imprinting on her arm! The nymph changing into a tree looked like you could just snap off the leaves. Pretty amazing. I really enjoyed learning and discussing with Max. Then Jeremy and I walked around, trying to not die of the heat. We waited outside for the others. Jeremy ended up falling asleep for awhile. Then it was finally time for our cooking class with Carmen and Carla. We were so excited to do this again. They had already made the ragu sauce because it needs to cook for many hours to make it good. We layered the eggplant parmesan - fried eggplant, mozzarella, basil, ragu sauce, and lots of parmesan. Then we layered the tirimisu. I love tiramisu. Lady fingers dipped in coffee and a cream made from whipped eggs (hand mixed!) and marscopone cheese. For the antipasti we chopped up lots of tomatoes on the terrace. 1 tomato for each person. There was also a salad of mushrooms, rocket, and cheese. We had to shave the mushrooms. Jacob dropped one on the ground and ended up putting it in his pocket so it didn't get used. We were able to use some fresh veggies straight from Carmen's garden. The carrots were already cooked so we got to peel them with knives. That was definitely interesting. After all the prep it was time to eat. We just love it on the terrace. I think that will be one of my favorite memories from the trip. Eating on the terrace at sunset is just so perfect. The food was really good, as it was last time. The antipasti was so good and fresh. Definitely some of the best bruscetta I had during the trip. The salad was very different, but very tasty. On to the pasta course. We all got HUGE bowls of pasta. I tried very hard to finish, but I couldn't. For the longest time it looked like I hadn't eaten anything. Second course was the eggplant parmesan and carrots with balsamic. I was so full, but everything was so light and yummy. I ended up eating an almost full plate of that. And then there was dessert. This tiramisu was different than what I had previously in Rome, but I still really liked it. Then we sat and talked and just enjoyed the atmosphere. It may have been the food, or the wine, or we were in just a good mood, but we ended up singing a bunch of songs. Our first number was Cecilia. Carmen and Carla were just having the best time. Jacob and Jeremy looked through their phones for more music to sing. I wish I could have bottles what we were feeling. It was such a good feeling. Good friends, good food, good times! We were all so sad when it was time to go. We were saying our goodbyes when we noticed a world map with lots of dots on it. They said it showed all their visitors. We then put a star on Wisconsin. We were the first star on the map. Max later told us that we are Carmen and Carla's favorite group so far. They loved how relaxed and friendly we were. We were so happy when we heard that because we had such a great time.
