We had a day of learning with a 2 hour walking tour of Oxford and a visit to the Ashmolian Museum. I missed the Pitt, so there is a reason to go back. Maybe when I return in November. The day tours go into the oldest colleges including New College, founded in 1379, so it isn’t really that new. We learned about the history of the city and the university. A collegiate system unique to Oxford and Cambridge. An example is their Postdoc program. Every autumn, All Souls College elects Examination Fellows. The College normally elects two from a field of fifty or more candidates. The Fellowships last seven years and cannot be renewed and most every thing is paid for. Imagine only 2 a year. The Bodleian Library, which we did not go in holds more than 13 million printed items, over 80,000 e-journals and outstanding special collections including rare books and manuscripts, classical papyri, maps, music, and art. Oh how wonderful it must be to go to Oxford.
