In order to get to Krabi, we left Ko Phagnan at 6 in the morning. We got on a bus, then on a ferry, then on another bus, then in a pick up truck (10 in the back, 4, including me, inside in the backseat and Barry in the front seat with the driver and the fluffy poodle) then we were taken to a restaurant. We had something to eat and were picked up by yet another bus to get to Krabi.
When we arrived in Krabi, we realised that it was the hottest place on the earth. I don't think I have ever been so hot in my life. It did not help that I had the impending doom of the dentist looming over my head, which made me slightly hotter. We stayed in a hotel close to the town and went in search of a dentist that the ladyboy at our guest house had recommended. This one was shut, so after being taken by a very friendly Thai lady on the back of her scooter to an open one I went in for my my appointment half an hour later. I was expecting to be greeted in a shack by a dodgy looking dentist with a sledge hammer but it turns out that they have very good dental services in Thailand, at a very reasonable price. After 45 minutes of drilling (without anesthetic as I was told it would only be a little sensitive) and filling in a very clean and respectable surgery, I had a brand new tooth for the appoximate sum of 12 GBP! I was impressed but not happy that she told me I needed two more fillings after my dentist had told me my teeth were fine! I'm coming back to Thailand for any dental work in the future. I had an emergency appointment on arrival, with a really nice dentist who explains everything she was doing, with a white filling, for less than the price of a check up in the UK! I am glad to have such a great souvenir to bring home, my very own "Krabi tooth"!
Whilst in Krabi we decided that we would go to Railay for the day to investigate the beach as we had heard that it was amazing. We headed across in a long tail boat and arrived at a stinky looking beach and wondered what we had done. After walking to the wrong beach we turned back and headed for another one and it was as amazing as people had said! We laid in the sun all day and came back very pink but not without seeing monkeys up close and swimming out to a big rock in the sea (not deep enough for sharks dad) and seeing the Princess Cave, where fishermen leave carved wooden phalluses as offerings in the hope that the spirit of the Indian Princess will grant them favours. Phalluses...favours...Freud would have a lot to say!
Krabi is the most "Thai" place that we have been. There were not that many other tourists there, which we found out when we were the only "farrang" at the night market. The market was amazing, there was so much to see and buy and there were so many Thai people going about their business buying everything from deep friend insects to puppies (the cute alive kind, not deep fried). There was also a live band playing at one end of the market.
On our last day in Krabi we went on an elephant trek in the jungle. It was amazing! The elephants were absolutely amazing. We showed up and got put onto the back of this elephant called Donga. Now I knew nellies were big but this was something else. You really have no idea until you are sitting on the back of one just how tall they really are. We got the best elephant without a doubt. He was so cool, he even did tricks with his trunk. His owner was sat on his head/neck and they treated them very well. They often stopped to eat and drink and blow sand through their trunks! We went through the jungle for an hour on these elephants, spotting monkeys and snakes along the way and a few giant flying things. The sounds were amazing, birds, bugs, monkeys and the stream flowing were the main things that you could hear. Halfway round Donga stopped and his owner got off and took some pictures of us. I was instructed to climb onto Donga's neck and although scary, it was really amzing to be sitting on an elephant! Later on near the end of the trek, his owner told me to get on his neck and I rode him whilst he was walking (where was my harness Mr health and safety?)! Barry then rode him through the stream and into camp.
After we rode the elephants we got to feed them cucumber and they took it with their trunks then shoved it in their mouths. Then off they were with the next people. We got to walk through the jungle after this to look for wildlife. This was not top of my list of activities for the day but I though i should be brave and turn all jungle woman. We found several chameleons and a couple of massive spiders! I got close enough to take a picture of one of them that only had four legs and struggled to see the other as it was high up in a tree. It wasn't as bad as I thought but I was not really too close so I cannot really comment on them as of yet. We were told we could swim in the steam (no thanks, I'll pass) and then went back to camp where we were taken back to our hotel and spent the rest of the day chilling out and checking out Krabi. I liked Krabi, it was quiet and had a lot of cockroaches at night but the nice dentist, elephant trek and amazing Railay beach made it something special. So next stop Ko phi Phi...I'm very excited about this one, I've heard only good things about it!
