Another day, another country, Cambodia this time. Arrived in Phnom Penh on Sunday evening and found a nice hostel down by the lake which was really cheap. It has lovely views over the lake at sunset but a lot of mosquitos after dark. Its malaria country now as well!
We have mainly been doing museums and trips out to the Khmer Rouge sites over the last 2 days. We went to the Pol Pot security prison today to see what happened to the prisoners who were taken there, not very nice. After that we went to the Killing Fields which is where the prisoners ended up and were executed. A lot of the mass graves have been excavated but some have been left as they were. There are bones and teeth all over the floor and clothes sticking out of the ground. The memorial building has about 8,000 skulls piled up which you can walk around. Our guide showed us from the skulls how some of the people died. Some were shot but most were either bludgeoned to death with blunt bamboo, some had sharp objects forced through their skulls. Our guide lost his dad, mum, sister and brother to the Khmer Rouge dso he was very passionate about what he was showing us.
It should be a bit more cheery at the next place which is Siem Reap tomorrow.
