Hey all,
Well im sure most of you know that Ive been here before. Oz was my first taste of tavelling back in 2002 when I well & truly caught the travel bug & have been totally unable to shake it ever since!! This country is sooooo unbelievably massive though that last time I missed out Queensland, so this time round I flew into Cairns so there was no chance that I was going to make the same mistake again!!
It was however a bad start to Oz. Bloody jetstar (aus's easyjet) left my backpack in Singapore so I had no luggage & no accommodation to tell them to deliver it to! Luckily some of y mates from Asia who were already here had told me where to stay so i just gave the name of the hostel & problem sorted, but still its a real pain in the arse being without your stuff especially when airport security confiscate the only toiletries you do have-thiefs!!
My first day in Cairns was awful, I felt sooo lonely, everyone I knew was in Sydney or still in Asia, I missed Julie & Asia sooo much & I was finding everything sooo expensive plus I had to live in dorms which I had mostly managed to escape in Asia and pay much more than I was used to! On to of that I had no bloody luggage!! I just went to the shops, bought a sim card, rough guide to oz &some toothpaste/brush & went to bed.
The next day I decided to get organised & actually plan some travels. I bought a flight from Brisbane to Sydney for 29th dec because then whatever happened I was going to spend new yr in Sydney which I had always wanted to do, plus Helen was there so I had a friend wooo hooo!!. So that gave me 2 wks to do the east coast which is of course no way long enough but thats the way it goes sometimes. I went to a backpackers & met Jo & Mark, a really nice couple from Bristol, turns out they had the same timescale & plans as me so we just booked everything together so I had friends yipeeee!!!
My bloody head cold came back with a vengeance because dorms have bloody air con here & unfortunately im always outnumbered massively when I suggest a vote to switch it off at night time (then the idiots all complain the nxt day when they wake up feeling rough-they cant believe its the air con-morons!!) Anyway as per usual when I have a cold I was going to dive the Great Barrier Reef the following day.
Diving the GBR is one of the reasons i learnt to dive in the first place so there was no way that a stupid cold was going to stop me!!! I paid a bit more & went diving off port Douglass rather than Cairns itself because I had heard that it was less crowded & the coral was in much better condition, it's also the spot where Steve Irwin died so there's tons of marine life. It did not disappoint. The reefs were amazing, there were little caves that we went in, sooo many fish, eels, sea snakes, I even saw a shark! Obviously not a great white shark cos I wouldn't be here otherwise but a reef shark, still it was bigger than me!! The visibility was great too & the coral is lovely so colourful & pretty.
After my second dive though, i came up with a bleeding nose & coughing up blood which freaked the hell out of me!! I also was sure that I would throw up,I cancelled my third dive & just sunbathed on the boat instead, I really perfected my lobster red look (forgot how harsh the sun was here!!) When we got back to dry land I swear i felt like crap & there really was no time to get sick I had 2 weeks full of activities planned.
A really nice girl from Kilburn moved into my dorm that night so I took her to dinner at a free dinner if you buy a drink place with Jo & Mark., I also got my backpack back so all was good! I went to bed very early though due to illness! Plus diving knackers me out!
In all Cairns wasn't half as good as I had been told, it was quiet too cos everyone was moving south but you know I was ill, homesick, missing Jules & Asia, plus I knew that all her friends and family were in Thailand with her so I was like ooh i wish my friends & family could come & see me -yeah generally feeling sorry for myself, oooh poor me in Australia( i know its ridiculous!)
Anyway till nxt time xxxx
