Caroline's World Tour
Hello from sunny Byron Bay! We arrived here lateish last night from Port Macquarie which was our first stop on our great tour of the East Coast! The weather has been absolutely beautiful since we left Sydney, when I woke up yesterday morning I looked out the window and all I could see was blue sky and palm trees! Not too shabby....
Our last day in Sydney was good - we went to Palm Beach cause Sarah wanted to see Summer Bay and it was exactly how it looked on the telly - even I recognised it and I haven't seen Home and Away since they moved it to Channel 5! The only problem with our little jolly was quite how far away it was - it should have been a clue when the bus journey cost $5 each way, but we still didn't cotton on. After about 45 minutes on the bus I spotted a sign saying Palm Beach 21km, and nearly choked! In total it took us nearly 2 hours to get there! After a nice stroll on the beach we were starving, but there was absolutely nowhere to eat, so we had to get back on the bus and wait another 2 hours til we got back to the city - talk about faint for lack of nourishment! Once we'd found something to eat we went to the Pylon Lookout, which is a museum and lookout housed in one of the pylons (unsurprisingly) of the Harbour Bridge. It was actually very interesting, although the weather had taken a turn for the worse by then so the views weren't as good as when we did the Bridge Climb - but of course, if I had a choice, I'd rather the good weather for the climb!
Our last night in Sydney was a quiet one, doing washing and packing as we had a very early start the next day - the bus left at 7am! We arrived in Port Macquarie at about half past one, and the journey wasn't too bad as the bus was quite empty and we were able to stretch out and sleep! We decided to go to the Koala Hospital in the afternoon - so sweet. Most of the patients we saw were permanent residents who can't be released back into the wild because they wouldn't survive, so they live a very comfy and cosseted life in the hospital! Koalas are such cute animals, it was nice to see them up close and nice to see these poor old or sick ones being well looked after. The chap that took us on the tour was obviously very proud of the whole operation, and so they should be. Very worth a visit if you're ever in Port Macquarie!
Yesterday we got the bus up to Byron Bay - another 7 hour journey! We didn't get in til late, so apart from a quick drink headed straight to bed. This morning we've already been to the beach, which is absolutely gorgeous, but its an absolute scorcher and I don't want to get burnt, so we're taking it easy! There's probably going to be quite a lot of chilling by the beach or the pool over the next few days.....its a hard life!
