Caroline's World Tour
Well, this is my last entry from Punta Arenas....and I still don't have much to say! Since I last updated, we have only been on one trip, to the Seno Otway Penguin Colony, which was excellent. You go in the evening, and you get to see the penguins right up close because you can wander in among their burrows. There's a little walkway you follow around and you see some penguins there and there are also a couple of hides and towers that you can see them from - on the beach and in amongst the grass. Its quite bizarre really, because you're looking out across this pampa, and you see a cow, a sheep, a penguin, another cow.....not exactly what you might expect! Particularly not, if like me, you've always really associated penguins with snow and ice! But it was excellent to see them up close, even if it is moulting season, so they all looked a bit mouldy! We also saw lots of animals on the drive there and back - reas, skunks, hundreds of sheep......all very interesting!
Apart from that, we haven't really been doing much! In the name of research we decided to dedicate a serious amount of time to watching Lord of the Rings (so we'll recognise it all when we get to New Zealand!). Unfortunately, after 9 hours, and 2 and a half movies, we went to watch the last part of the 3rd film, only to discover the DVD had no sound! Gutted! So now we don't know what happens....but don't tell us, cos we're hoping to watch the rest when we actually get there!
Yesterday evening we went out for a drink with Carla, the manager of the hostel we're in. The house belongs to her family, and she runs it for them and I think she gets a bit bored! I was a bit concerned when it became clear that we were driving - not only because there were 6 of us, but also because we were going to a bar! But thankfully it wasn't a heavy night, so no need to panic on the drive home! It was a cool bar, and quite nice to see something of Punta Arenas that the locals see. Carla's really nice, and has obviously appreciated having some guests as it seems pretty quiet around here at the moment!!
We're now just killing time until our flight at 4, we'll be in Santiago quite late, so it'll probably be straight to bed! We've got quite a lot to fit in in the next 4 days, so no more lazing around for us!
