El Chalten is a small developing town purely catering for trekkers who come to see the infamous Fitz Roy mountain. I really pity any teenager who grows up here as there really is nothing else to do but trek and from what i know of being a teenager, trekking is not high on the list of things to do.
On our 1st day we trekked for a few hours to see views over the town and across to Fitz Roy. The trek alone was pretty amazing, but to add to our amazement there was a 4 year old girl called Luna, with her dad and grandfather who must have been in his 80`s. It was humbling and inspiring to see a man of his age doing what was a fairly strenuous hike up a steady incline whilst his tearaway granddaughter clambered over every rock in sight.
The next walk lead us to views over a lake and miles and miles of flat empty land. Here you really got a sense of being in the middle of nowhere. A rather liberating experience actually.
Day 2 we headed to see Fitz Roy, or Roy Fitz as we fondly named him. The sun shone and we had almost perfect views of the magnificent Fitz - which is q.lucky as some days he`s real shy and likes to hide beneath a blanket of clouds. The walk to see Fitz was magical. The colours of the Patagonian countryside in Spring is intense and diverse. There were silver branched trees surrounded by red flowering shrubs, many different shades of green grasses, streams of crystal clear water and huge shardes of rocks with snow capped peaks as a backdrop. The amount of times we said "Wow! This is so beautiful!" was countless. You wanted to take a photo nearly every few minutes. I (caroline) fancied Roy Fitz and its surrounding big time.
The walk was made even more pleasurable by the company of our new Ozzie friend Kelly. Kelly finds amusement and laughter in many things and her loud, contagious laugh brings a smile to your face even if you don`t wanna laugh. Lucky for us, Kelly was the complete opposite of our other univited companion. An Israeli girl called Yael, A.K.A. Moomin, Honey Monster or The Oval (due to her unfortunatle shape). It may sound mean, but she had a face like thunder and a personality to match. Manners and grace are alien to her and her demands of "Take my photo" with no pleases or thank yous were just one of the many irriatants she had to offer.
Day 3 (after another night of Moomin snoring through our earplugs) we awoke to snow. Patagonia really does have 4 seasons in 1 day. So we waited til after lunch, by which time the snow had stopped and we headed out for our last Fitz Fix. This trek led us up snowy paths to another view point of Ftiz, but he was feeling a bit camera shy so remained beneath his cloud blanket.
Oh and of course i must mention the hostel horse, i mean dog. The hostel had this HUGE dog that roamed around ignoring everyones calls and looking quite fed up of the fuss people made of him. Hilarious. He was so big that you could have used him to ride up into to mountains. AHhhhh - Bless!
