Cape Cod (Massachusetts)
WTF were we thinking driving to Cape Cod on Friday afternoon on the 4th of July long weekend??? 50-mile long bumper-to-bumper traffic and a near death incident with a redneck driving a caravan, we arrived safely in Wellfleet at Maurice's campground in desperate need of a beer!
We set up camp for our 6-night stay, gatecrashing Kev and Ashleigh Southworth's summer vay-cay.
It seems we attract neighbours from hell… This time, 12 Brazilians who partied hard with their Latino beats and downed bottles of rum, which resulted in us witnessing a grown man projectile vomit down the side of his tent. It was wonderful to be able to escape to the Southworth's "cottage" as often as we did. We were spoilt senseless, as only Kev and Ash know how. Days started with pancakes/bacon/maple syrup/egg burritos/freshly brewed coffee and great company. Hayley's bowels and saddlebags did not know what hit them! Lazy days on the beach playing with the kids were sublime and evenings were spent stargazing around a roaring fire and talking kak til the wee hours. For our first 4th of July festivities, we headed down to the beach with a couple hundred roadies, to watch private fire works, which were just great!
We took a drive to the end of the tip and were bowled over by Provincetown: the gay-est town ever. Muscle Mary's and Beefy Bears dominated the shops and bars, strutting their stuff down the high street. The Pink Dollar rules P-town! An old whaling town that is still quaint and beautiful, refreshingly not over commercialized. Be sure to check the calendar of events before you head to P'town, cos if you don't like drag queens, guys in purple thongs cycling down main street or a whole bunch of screaming, rich queens, this aint gonna be your scene.... Brighton, just more beautiful.
The cherry on the top of an awesome week was our beach bonfire on our last night. We were lucky b*****s to get the last beach fire permit after queuing outside the beach office for an hour. Only 16 permits are given out each day, split equally amongst Wellfleet's four town ocean beaches. It was a wonderful way to end our time in Cape Cod, spent with the amazing Southworth family, both sets of grandparents and Mocha the dog!
Kev and Ash: your generosity and hospitality consistently blows us away and we are truly blessed to have you and your families in our lives. Thank you all for making this week one we will never forget. Mr & Mrs Southworth Snr and Russ, what a treat to have met you all, please can we do this again one day soon.
P.s. John, don't forget to wire us the winnings from our Lotto ticket…
Cape Cod done: life is still good! Bye bye beach, Niagara Falls here we come. Let's hope our tan's don't fade too quickly.
