Up at 8am
Off on the Tube to London.
Going to Madame Tussaud's.
Got out of the station and it was raining quite heavily.
Only 50 yards to The Wax Museum....but the crowd and the line went all the way down the street and around the corner.
I joined it... But only for 10 seconds....
It was massive.
Because of the rain, I think.... Everyone decided to do indoor activities.
So I didn't get to go to Madame Tussaud's after all.
Caught the Hop On Hop Off Bus to Trafalgar Square.
Had a look in the National Gallery and had some lunch there.
Wandered into St Martin's In The Field.
This is a beautiful church.
It was still raining quite heavily, but after walking around Trafalgar Square again, I asked some policemen for directions to Churchill's War Rooms.
It was quite a walk...nearly to Buckingham Palace.
Found it after a couple of wrong turns.
This was amazing.
The rooms had simply been closed down after the war.
So they were able to preserve it very well and the museum and information is fantastic.
The War Cabinet Room is just as it was.
The Radio Room.
Bedrooms.
The Map Rooms.
Amazing.
It was referred to as the Number 10 Annexe.
It was not built as a bunker, just fortified as they could.
The location was a huge secret that never managed to leak out during the war.
No bombs ever landed on it.
Marvellous place to visit.
Then I wandered on to have another look at Buckingham Palace....walked a wonderful route by a lake...The Princess Diana Memorial Walk...it was beautiful, even in the rain.
Saw a small carriage go in and out of the Palace grounds...dropped someone off and then left again.
Took a long, last look down The Mall.
And at the Queen Victoria Statue.
Then headed off to tour The Royal Mews.
Saw beautiful horses and lots of spectacular carriages....topped off by the gold carriage...only used for very special events.
I enjoyed this immensely
And the sun had come out....
So, after asking directions from the staff in The Royal Mews Shop...
(who were MOST impressed with my 'crushable' map of London, Brooke )
I headed back towards Buckingham Palace and then down The Birdcage Walk to Westminster Bridge.
Wandered around the outside only of Westminster Abbey.
Wow!
Saw and heard Big Ben strike 4pm...
Over the bridge to lean on the stone wall on the edge of The Thames and gaze at The Houses Of Parliament .... whilst eating a Mr Whippy ice cream.
Then I tried to decide....River Cruise or home.
I came home.
Good idea.
Had a great day...but I don't think I am going into London tomorrow.
I'm a bit worn out.
So I am going to have a quiet day.
