Decided to get away early as there are a lot of Asians around here!! Missed the first train by thirty seconds and waited half an hour to get next. The first major stop is Grindelwald although a couple of smaller places along the way. Strange when we left here the train went back down but very soon started climbing and climb at about 45 degrees all the way. We had to change train at Kleine Scheidegg. While the you tube flicks you see the ride is not that scary. After there they make a stop at Eigerwand where they let you out as a lookout is carved out of the mountain and noticed is was starting to get a bit colder as temperature at Interlaken was about 24 degrees. After five minutes take off again and then stop at Eismeer. Similiar to last stop and getting colder. While the trip from Interlaken took two and a quarter hours the last roughly 45 minutes is all underground in a tunnel dug out over a long period starting in 1896. We think digging a hole is bad. When you reach the top there are about four restaurants souvenir shops watch shops etc and while still inside the building the air is considerably thinner. The views are spectacular and I took a walk out onto what they call the plateau and it was cold about -5.5 degrees. Didn't stay there long although I was dressed for such an occurrence it was still hard to take. There is a tour along a myriad of tunnels and I went through the ice palace which is made of ice and a lot of ice sculptures. While the views were fantastic I couldn't believe how the rail was made as it is the highest railway in the world. Although it took about sixteen years to do with no machinery how they even got it level is astounding and not only is there one tunnel but two at certain sections. While going up takes a while it doesn't seem that long and the trip down is quicker. But if you were planning to go there it is a one day trip. Bloody tiring all this as you seem to be on the go all the time. No chance of gaining weight. Had lunch at Jungfrau and it cost 21.00 for a schnitzel!! Well I suppose you can't go anywhere else! On the way down saw the only animal I've seen on the snow - a wolf. Had dinner at the restaurant our apartment owner owns and now the boys have headed uptown. Me - off to bed. Gabrielle sky diving tomorrow so going along to lend support. I'm a little over heights. Still can't believe the number of wood stacks littered around the hillside all perfectly stacked and no gaps. Following football scores and Afl app actually adjusts to local time and often says starts at 7.40 am. Must have been a good game Anzac Day. We were having breakfast in Geneva at the time with iPad reflecting the scores.
By the way some of photos up the top seem black and white but that's how it is. Really need sunglasses on a day like today but if I put them on wouldn't be able to take photos as not bifocal. But it is very hard to open eyes squinting you can get away with. When got back to Interlaken from four layers of clothing back to a t shirt.
