Craig & Jills Round the World Trip
Next stop was a couple of nights stopover in Christchurch, and our first experience of staying in a hostel with no ensuite! On Saturday we went to Akora, which is on the coast. The drive gave us some beautiful views of the long harbour, once again with shimmering green water, green hills and blue sky. We were hoping to go swimming with dolphins, we got kitted out in some very unflattering wet suits, and went up the inlet aboard a small dingy boat. Unfortunetly we didnt get to swim with any dolphins, however we got to see several pods of Hector dolphins, which are the smallest and rarest dolphins in the world. We werent able to swim with them as they all had babies with them, which were so cute and tiny, approx 40cm long, little rugby balls with flippers. If we had gone into the water this could have endangered the babies as they need to keep feeding off there mum (plus probably got everyone else excited thinking they had spotted a new breed of whale!). Although we were a bit disappointed we didnt get to go in the water, it was still fantastic to see the dolphins esp the babies.
On Sunday we drove south stopping off at Mouraki boulders, which are bizarre huge round stones buried in the sand on the beach.
Our next stop was Dunedin which unbeknown to us is Scottish and has family ties. The town was first settled by the Burns clan many years ago and has several buildings which made reference to Burns in the title. Dunedin is at the start of a long peninsula which we drove along, stopping off at some nice beaches, complete with sleeping seals. On the end we saw lots more seals and pengin beach without any penguins! There was also an albatross centre, basically huge seagulls to you and me. The place was full of cardigan wearing bird watchers all comparing the size of there zoom lenses!
