Craig & Jills Round the World Trip
Tokyo not quite what we were hoping for. Its a bizarre place where ladies wear kimonos next to people in masks. There isn't a centre as such, just lots of districts, that we have spent the last few days working our way round. Different types of people seem to congregate in different areas.
Saturday we went for a walk round the grounds of the Imperial palace where the king lives. The gardens were nice but not as pristine as you would expect. We then went to Ginza, high class shopping district, lots of steady looking people, men in suits and women dressed up like they were going to a wedding not the shops. In the evening we went to Shinjuka where we got to see the neon lit streets. This is a popular enterainment area, with the major attraction for locals being arcade games and slot machines.
Sunday we went to Asksara which dates back 1000 years, however like many sights we have seen here the original building was burnt down, so only renovated replicas remain. We went to a temple which wasnt very elaborate or tranquil, just packed full of japs barging through taking photos. Glad to see they behave the same in there own country.
We had a look round electric city, basically streets full of shops selling electronic items. Some cool mobile phones but unfortunately they wont work in uk so no point buying one. Also girls dressed in bizarre outfits, see the photos.
Sunday night we went to watch some baseball, when we got to the stadium it was almost sold out with only standing tickets left. For a fiver we decided to go in anyway. A huge indoor dome with 45000 fans, proving baseball is very popular out here. We wern't impressed as our ticket was to watch from the concourse level round the edge, so it was elbows at dawn to get a view. The locals put newspaper on the floor to mark there territory similar to the germans and there beach towels. We stayed for most of the game which was quite entertaining due to lots of runs and the fans making loads of noise.
Today we got up at 4.30 to go to the famous fish market, which is one of the biggest in the world. We arrived at 5am bleary eyed to a hive of activity. Lots of stalls selling a huge array of fish of every description. All very fresh which meant it didnt smell as bad as we had feared. If squeamish you may want to give these photos a miss.
In the afternoon we went up a tower for a view of the city, the haze stopped us seeing as far as Mount Fuji. We then went to Shinbuya, finally somewhere with a bit of life, full of young people wearing wacky clothes & big hair dos. Loads of clothes shops and love hotels, which the youngsters go to for a "rest".
Touring Tokyo has been a little difficult, the subway is huge like London and nothing is in english. Tokyo isn't the mad state of the art place we thought it would be. Everything runs on time and is kept very clean, however most buildings are old and 80's looking. Also everyone seems to smoke, even in restaurants. It seems to be full of contradictions, people all bow politely at you, but then barge you out of the way!
Next stop Kyoto, and a journey on the bullet train.
