Craig & Jills Round the World Trip
Once again had problems getting a non-smoking room at our hotel, everyone seems to smoke here and they don't understand the concept of a non-smoking. Shanghai is another vast city, with buildings as far as the eye can see, however, it is a lot less westernised and modern than anticipated, which is a good thing. The city is a mix of old and new but definitely still has a Chinese feel.
On Monday we took a trip a couple of hours away from Shanghai to a traditional water village Wuzhen. Narrow alleyways of wooden houses along canals, very picturesque and tranquil, weeping willow trees and groups of locals playing Majhong. We had a tour round and got to see a wine, spirit and beer made from rice. The spirit nearly blew Craig's head off it was that strong!
Tuesday unfortunately the weather was cloudy and raining, I suppose we shouldn't be complaining as we have hardly seen rain since we started our trip. We worked our way round some of the city's sights, first heading to the Jade Buddha temple. The Buddhists temples here are quite different to those we saw in Thailand, but still very interesting & beautiful. Lots of burning incense in the air and red lanterns hung outside.
Next we explored the old quarter, which isn't that old but has lots of traditional style buildings, it also has a lovely Chinese garden full of ponds, small bridges and pagodas. There are also a couple of pretty temples here as well. After a lunch of the standard sticky rice, cabbage and watermelon we went for a walk along the river at the Bund. The old financial centre with grand stone European buildings on one side and the modern skyscrapers on the other side. However, the weather was so cloudy we could only see the bottom part of the famous Oriental TV tower.
At night we went for a cruise along the river to see all the buildings lit up, we could see the old ones at the Bund, but the skyscrapers were still hidden in the clouds so it was a bit disappointing.
Wednesday we had no tour guide so we went and explored ourselves. We used the subway, which was a lot less scary than driving on the roads where people are constantly cutting each other up! Of course seen as it was our last day we had to go and do some final shopping and went hunting for bargains at the market. We also went back to the riverfront and were very pleased that we were able to see right to the top of all the skyscrapers.
China has been another amazing country and a fitting end to our trip. Thankfully we haven't seen many dodgy things being eaten on the streets and the people have once again been very friendly. The only thing we haven't enjoyed in China are some of the potent smells as you walk around and also the toilets. I had managed to avoid squat toilets the entire trip until we got to China!!
It still doesn't feel like the end of our trip as we have seen so much this last week, we fly home on Thursday which will be our 37th flight!!!!
