Our morning started with cheesy beans on toast for breakfast to set us up for the day ahead of us. My amazing mum had sent a second parcel full of Christmas presents which had arrived in New Zealand but had not been delivered successfully to our air BnB accommodation for Christmas. It was currently at the FedEx depot in Auckland so later that day we would need to pick it up.
We booked our cave tour at Waitomo isite tourist office and we headed straight there.
The tour was short but sweet. The guide explained that the cave would have been approximately 10 million years old which is just insane to think about. The cave was mainly made up of limestone which he explained would have been formed by hundreds and thousands of years of dead sea creatures being squashed at the bottom of the sea bed to form layers. Those very layers were visible in the cave walls. At the end of the tour, we took a short boat ride in the pitch black to leave to cave. We had to be completely silent in order to see the hundreds of glow worms over the top of us. It was incredible to see!
After the 45 minute tour, which was actually perfect for us, we decided to make our journey to Auckland. I contacted FedEx before to organise our pick up, and we were off! Two and a half hours later, we arrived! I had imagined Auckland to be a big city as the Capital but actually it's fairly small in comparison to our cities at home. One thing I have noticed though is that although the towns and cities in New Zealand our very small, they are all very clean and well kept. No where that we have seen is 'rough' looking or dirty. Kiwis are clearly very passionate and patriotic about keeping their country great which I think is evident. Also combined with the fact there is only 4 million people living in New Zealand so there's not as many people to mess it up anyway!
We picked up the massive cardboard box full of Christmas pressies from FedEx and headed to the McDonalds opposite for some food. They had a deal on which resulted in Matt and I having two burgers each! I felt sick after! We parked the camper in one of the central car parks and headed into central Auckland for a wonder around the shops. I shopped for two hours or so while Matt played a game of Poker in the Sky bar casino. I ended up spending a fortune and Matt ended up losing a fortune... yet again, we should never separate!
We were still full from our ridiculously large amount of food from McDonalds so we skipped dinner and headed to the cheapest campsite we could find in Auckland, there weren't many! It would be Christmas Eve tomorrow, how exciting!!
