We made a campers breakfast of milky porridge, with a lovely cup of sugary tea. The porridge oats tasted a little weird but smothered with sugar, it was all good! I was desperate for a shower again as we hadn't stayed in a campsite for two nights and probably weren't later so we found a lot cal swimming pool to see if we could use their showers. The guy at reception seemed a little shocked at my request but offered us both showers for a dollar each, absolute bargain! Unfortunately, there was a Child's swim session on so the changing rooms were overcrowded with children and their parents. It was a little awkward when Matt and I walked in and joined the queue for the showers.
Feeling fresh, we wanted to check out Dunedin a little better before heading on to see the Moeraki boulders and later Oamaru.
Dunedin has a real British feel about the city with a lot of English/Scottish style buildings, one of which including the train station. There was also a lot of vintage cars driving around the place, all over the South we found, it seems Kiwi's like there vintage and retro things. We spent some time in the library using their computers to research a few things and contact home as we were informed the libraries have free wifi, before moving on to look at the shops. As we were only in campsites every few days and were now trying to eat in the Campervan as much as possible to cut down on spending a little, it was actually quite hard to find good wifi areas to contact friends and family at home, download our photos, up date our blogs and research things to do here. I have to admit I find this hard sometimes as I'm very much someone who likes to organise and research things a lot.
After a little shop around and a new purchase of sunglasses, we got back in our camper and drove out to the Otago peninsula of Sea lions and Albatross centre. We managed to get very up close to sea lions that were resting near the peninsula edge. Typical Matt managed to get just a bit too close when trying to take a selfie with one sea lion who growled, showing all his teeth and started to make a dash for him. Matt, being the macho man that he is, performed an embarrassingly high pitch squeal followed by a nervous laugh as he darted away from the sea lion and directly behind me!!!
After we had all the successful sea lion selfies we could possibly want, we walked back up the steps only to cross the same Chinese family that we met on the wooden jetty in Glenorchy! To be in two places at the same time, 250 miles apart was pretty bizarre. We went into the Albatross centre to see where they were nesting. Although Matt would never admit it, he actually knows a fair bit about birds and started to reel off interesting facts about Albatrosses. It's like being with a walking talking book of general knowledge with this boy sometimes. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see any Albatrosses, but we were there only a short time and they are incredibly rare to see... apparently.
We drove on an hour to see the Moeraki Boulders. Now, if you look these up online, as we did, they look really big and actually quite awesome. In real life... we nearly walked straight past them. It was only because there was a group of Chinese friends taking photos on top of a round rock in the sand that we stopped for a moment and realised that was it! They were pretty cool but not amazing, and as it was howling a gail, we took a couple of snaps and quickly left the beach.
As the weather was pretty bad at this point, we decided to find a cheap DOC site, make dinner there and relax with a film in the camper. The Glencoe DOC site was 16 dollars which wasn't too bad, we made sausage and tomato pasta on our single stove and played a few games of cards. It was hailing down so hard at one point that we weren't able to talk over the noise of it hitting the tin shelter above us. Even though it was pouring down with rain, I really appreciated where we were at that moment and enjoyed being outdoors cooking together, despite the weather. After cleaning up, we called it a night while we chilled in the camper before drifting off.
