Departed Perth, heading north. Very soon out of Perth the sand dunes start appearing and just keep re-appearing. Beautiful white sand dunes, with the odd shrub growing amongst them, looking to the tops you see the wind stirring it up and creating sand swirls. The boys are trying to con us into buying them sand dune riding boards - as if they have not got enough toys already! We are aiming to set up camp at Sandy Cape. We secure one of the last camp sites, its Anzac long week end over here, it predicts to be a busy weekend!
After setting up camp, the afternoon heat has kicked in; we all decide to go for a swim. The water is very pleasant, the boys are desperate to snorkel, however the visibility is not very good, so they do not snorkel for long. I can't see the bottom, but something has grabbed hold of my toes and that sees the end of my swim.
Friday morning we backtrack a little to "The Pinnacles" in Numbung National Park. The Pinnacles are limestone rocks that rise above the sand dunes. Some are only small; others are over 2 meters high. We decide to take the walk first, and then drive, we are glad with our decision as there are very few other people around as we are there at opening time. Lachlan spots a stumpy tail lizard in the bushes leading to the Pinnacles. The boys set up their own game of "advancing the enemy" as we entering the Pinnacles. It soon becomes a game of where is Wally - AKA Lachlan who is hiding is many of the photo's !.
After the Pinnacles we head off to the small township of Cervantes, a Crayfish harvesting town. We visit the Lobster Shack and purchase a lobster and some Carnarvon Prawns. We time it perfectly to explore the jetty; we saw two boats returning to port to unload their catches. Both boats unload approx. 300/350 kilos of lobster, unfortunately, the do not drop any our way!
We pull in for lunch at Jurien Bay. On the foreshore is the RAC (Royal Auto Club), they were promoting safe driving, their latest campaign is their touring Elephant. The Elephant is made up of the remains of 8 car fatalities. The eyes are old phones, the tail is a windscreen wiper, the tusks are old seat belts, and there are handles, tyre rims, lights, blinkers. On the Jetty, the boys are most impressed when a teenage boy caught a North Western Blow fish, a good size - 600mm, putting up a good fight. Unfortunately, the blow fish are not a good catch, they are just like the European Carp for us.
Back at camp, Brad is in Diving envy! Our neighbour has been off shore diving and has caught 11 good sized Crayfish. In his boat, he headed off between the two islands on the horizon and pulled up to the reef where he was able to dive for them in approx. 5 meters of water. If only we had tinny! And our diving gear. Next time!!!
This morning we continued on, Port Denison and Dongara also Cray fishing townships and well worth spending more time in future. We decide to set up camp in Geraldton. We are very mindful of there not being 7 days a week trading, Monday is a public holiday and seeing as we are continuing north were there will be limited supplies, so we stock up on our fresh supplies.
In the afternoon we explore Geraldton. We visit the memorial for the HMAS Sydney II, which sits on the hills of Geraldton. At the site, we meet an ex-Navy Soldier, who fills us in on some of the history. The memorial was built in 2001, (there was a dispute between Geraldton and Carnarvon as to where the memorial was to be built). At the memorial is a dome with 645 birds, representing the 645 lives lost in the downing of HMAS Sydney II. There is also bronze statue of a woman looking out the sea. Then in 2008, the location of the HMAS Sydney is located. Ironically it lies in the direction the woman is looking to - very aerie!
On the waterfront at Geraldton is a waterpark with many sprinkler's and water cannons the boys were happy to play with.
Back at Camp, Brad replaces the fuel filter and I try and find space for the re-stocking of supplies.
