Douglas Brown's Travels
Day 34 Today was La Fête nationale or Bastile Day France's most important national holiday. The city was alive with people many displaying their French patriotism with red, whit and blue attire of face decoration. After breakfast Gregory Senior and I set off on a 2 hour Segway tour of Nice. We were motivated by the hill terrain and the desire to have a spin on this unique vehicle. Both Gregory and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience both from the site seeing perspective and mastering of a new vehicle. I certainly will be doing more Segwaying when the opportunity arises. It was a very warm day so the Segway tour was followed by a cold beer and lunch on the water front before hopping on a train for the 20minute journey to Monaco. We wandered around the Monaco water front and up the hill to Casino square to see the Monte Carlo Casino. No 007's in sight. Exotic vehicles and water craft were in abundance and tourist could be seen posing for photos next to their dream cars. We made the mistake of stopping for a beer at a cafe only to be charged 14 euro for one beer. I guess this is how Monarcians afford their expensive toys. Back to the train for the journey back to Nice which did not go as planned when we disembarked at the wrong Nice station and had to walk 2.8km in the heat of the afternoon. Hot, tired and with sore legs from the walking and Segwaying, we retired to our rooms for a rest. At 9pm I decided that I had done enough walking for one day and that I would eat dinner in the hotels roof top resturant. While enjoying a three course "national Birthday Menu", the fireworks display over the coast started and I had a perfect seat for the show.
