Douglas Brown's Travels
Day 32 Today we travel 297 km to the highest town in Europe (1326 meters) and Lois XIV deemed it a strategic town in France's defence against the Austrians. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian 231;on lois XIV commissioned Vauban to construct a fort to protect the citadel and also France from the Austrians. Vauban constructed a star shaped fort around the small city. The star shape being chosen because any attackers of the wall would be in crossfire from two sides. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sé bastien_Le_Prestre_de_Vauban We headed South West from Chamonix to Flumet before turning South East to Buorg St. Maurice then on to Val d'Lsere. Heading South West from Val d'Lsere we crossed out first pass of the day, Col de L'lseran, 2770 meters. This is the highest paved road in the Alps. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Col_de_ l%27Iseran It was refreshingly cool at the summit of this pass. We then headed South West to our second pass for the day, Col du Galibier, 2645 meters. This pass is often the highest pass of the Tour de France and as such the road was heavy with lycra clad cyclists. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Col_du_ Galibier After descending from this pass we headed South to Our last pass for the day, Col du Lautaret, 6749 meters. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Col_du_ Lautaret Finally heading South East to Briancon. Our evening meal was in a resturant in the old walled city.
