Douglas Brown's Travels
Day 17 We set off at 8am for the 284km trip following the Vltava River to The Austrian border then onto Salzburg. Much of todays ride is through pristine Austrian countryside with picture perfect scenery. I even found my self singing "The `hills are alive with the sound of music. With songs they have herd for a thousand years". Unfortunately I could not remember the next line of the song so I just continuously repeated those two lines until my throat got dry. The first major town we passed today was Vyssi Brod shortly before the Czech/Austrain border. We then carried on South to Bad Leonfelden before heading West to Rohrbach. we then headed South to Oberkappel where we stopped for coffee. We continued South through Waizenkirchen and Grieskirchen before turning west at Gmunden. Shortly after Gmunden we stopped for lunch. before the final ride to Salzburg. The roads were amazing and words can not explain how stunning the scenery was. We arrived in Salzburg at approx 3pm As my knee was causing me a fair bit of discomfort and two of the other had leg injuries, we chose not to go on the walking tour of town. We taxied it to the central square then caught the funicular railway to the castle. The view over Salsburg is breath taking. Unfortunately from the lower battlement where the railway drops you there is a climb up two steep flights of stairs to enter the castle proper. Not wanting to aggravate my knee further by climbing stairs, I chase to stay at the lower level and admire the view. By the time the others returned from their castle wander it was time to head down and meet the rest of the group for dinner. We had already arranged to meet them in the square at 7pm.
