Johannesburg has European style shopping centres like Sandton City with international fashion chains and shops geared up for Christmas. My own retail interest, however, was in the outdoor shops - because the South Africans have really good kit for sports, camping and four-wheel driving. One of the things that really struck me however was that all the outdoor shops had big collections of evil looking knives for sale - which is a thing you rarely see in the UK. Some Knives were enormous - one was the size and shape of a Ghurka khukri - can't imagine what you would want that for unless you were thinking of beheading someone!
Johannesburg is also the most "European" of all the African cities on this trip and an appropriate staging post to start my journey back to the UK eg unlike the other African cities on this trip it is linked to the airport by a rapid transit system - the Gautrain - which only takes about 13 minutes from Sandton.
However, the flight back is in two legs and the first leg is Jo'burg to Nairobi, so I have the pleasure of yet another transit through Jomo Kenyatta to look forward to before getting back to the UK.
