We needed to get some kilometres under our belts after the Bolobo stop yesterday, so we pushed on last night until well after dark and eventually called it a day opposite Mboya (all lit up - on the opposite, French, bank - the first street lights we have seen for weeks). Just avoided getting speared by a large barge which was also pulling in in the pitch dark, but not by much.
There was lots of yelling, metallic banging and revving of large marine diesel engines just after 0500 this morning as the first of the barges prepared to move on upstream, so we were all up early.
I knew that a place mentioned in Jack's letters (called Tshumbiri) was in this area, but wondered if we had passed it in the dark last night. We asked the local village head whether there was an old mission house nearby and he said there was. After checking that 'nearby' didn't mean 5km away, we went off for an early morning wander with him acting as guide - and found the house built by one of Jack's predecessors - less than 300m from where we had camped. It has great views over the River Congo, which narrows significantly just a few kilometres upstream and you can see why Bolobo staff occasionally used it as a stop over or for a bit of R & R.
What is amazing though is that if we hadn't decided to push on in the dark last night, we wouldn't have camped within 300m of the house and wouldn't have had the opportunity to see it at all.
