We arrived in Mui Ne (coast of vietnam) stinking hot weather trying to find accomodation when grace says "abbey did u grab the washing bag off the bus?" this bag had literally all our clothes in it. Abbeys reply "oohhh s***...". after a quick word to a travel guy he tracked down where the bus was and the chase was on - basically like out of a james bond movie. Grace jumped on the back of a motorcycle, pumped along the beach roads at 60km and caught up with the bus 12km down the road. Washing secured up front with the driver we flew back to where britt and abbey had secured some accomodation! win win situation really. Accomdation was $4US each, fans, ensuite and a friendly geko that broke in the second night!
Group consensus was to hit the beach straight after lunch. Loungers, cold beer, warm sea and our books - we were set for the afternoon. Drinking games at 4pm started off the night, headed to a place that advertised free welcome drink - and rice snacks - we were sold, followed by pogo bar (on the back of motorcycles, racing the whole way - abs won) for a vodka bucket - half a bottle of vodka and 2 redbulls and another snack, back on the motor bikes, abs and grace with a driver on one and britt riding as a lone wolf but still with the wolf pack, so at this point the wolf pack was 5 (drivers included), the last destination of the evening was wax bar on the beach, with a fire show and bean bags, cold beers and music! Short trip accross the road and we were home...
Day 2 we took it upon our own shoulders to be tour guides. We hired 2 manual motorbikes for abbey and grace, and an auto for birtt. Took a few turns and staright runs to get a hang of the gear changing but soon enough we had it under control and were away. Quick fill up of petrol and we headed for our first destination - fairy stream - lets just say after 45mins of trying to find this place, coming accros many non english speaking people pointing us in the wrong direction we opted out on this sight. Not such a great start for our tour guide confidences. However this soonly changed when we managed to sneak into a resort, on the beach front to buy a coke each and large water. Also reaping the benefits of large refreshing pool, loungers and bungalows on the beach!
We jumped back on our bikes and we successfully managed to find our way to the red dunes. We parked up and hired a plastic board and trudged our way up the dunes. Bright red/orange sand everywhere overlooking the Mui Ne beaches. We lined up at the top of a dune where a vietnamese women was helping tourists out, she readied the dune chucking sand down to make a track, positioned our legs and arms, got in behind and put her body on the line giving us a big push and diving into the downward slope. Pretty fun stuff but the hike back really did kill us.
We decided we had enough time to get to the white sand dunes before dark. They were 25km away, but with bad signage/ no signage it took a little bit longer. We arrived, parked up and were going to get charged 5000dong (25cents) to leave our bikes there, and being the tight stingy tourists we are decided we didnt want to pay and would rather just a photo from accross the lake anyway. Night time was setting in as we bumped along the dirt road, skidding a few times in the soft sand when all of a sudden britt came to halt...grace asks "whats wrong why did u stop?" britt replies "ive run out of petrol..." by now its 6pm, the light is gone and no one really speaks english. Grace once again jumps on her bike and the mission is on. Luckily at the end of the bumpy dirt raod 1km along there was a wee lady with a petrol pump. Grace managed to use hand signals to get 1L of petrol in a plastic bag, put inside a shopping bag and zoomed back to the rescue. With a hole in the corner of the bag the tank got filled...however did not start straight away. A few minutes rest though and it was up and running. A good 35km on the open road, hitting speeds of 100km and we made it back to Mui Ne in one piece.
Overall loved the motorcycle experience and the chance to finally get behind the horn, beach was awesome, and definitly plan to sneak into another resort along the trip.
Booked our bus to get to Dalat in the morning, dinner and home to bed.
