So, the last week has been fast and furious. Rarely do we have a deadline when travelling, which makes all our planning pretty lax and last minute. But this week we actually had to organize our days and our journeys, so we could be in Tulum (south of Cancun) to meet Laura and Katy.
We travelled to Oaxaca, a beautiful, picture perfect little city. With lots of amazing Chruches and architecture. Lots of lime washed walls and a cobbled streets leading to the central square. Our hostel was a great little place, Casa Angel, a short walk into the centre. We only spent one day there and then we travelled on to Puerto Escondido by night bus. This is Mexico's premier surfing spot and holds a couple of international events in July. So we didn't come here because we are now amazing surfers!, it's cause most surfing places are pretty chilled and laid back, and this was the case. The surf was extremely strong when we were there, with people tackling the "pipeline". Pretty sacry, I did hire a board and had a go in the white water, on the Zicatela Playa, but it's really for the pros.
We walked along the coast and found another couple of beautiful beaches with much calmer surf. Lots of Mexicans come here for the weekend but the beaches are great, right on the Pacific coast.
The next stop on the overnight bus was San Christobal de las Casas. Another colonial town with Spanish buildings and lots to do in the surrounding area. We went on a day trip to a local town, San Juan de Chamula, just 15 mins from SCDC. We saw how the local ladies weave their crafts and got a tour of the Church, which was very odd. It's a Saint John The Baptist Chruch, and consists of Shaman (like elders), but these guys can talk directly to various Saints (including Jesus….pretty handy). They also heal people, by selecting a particular number and size of candles to burn along with the sacrifice of a chicken in the Church. (Western medicine has a lot to learn!) We were able to watch this going on and Kim saw a wee chicken getting its neck rung!
Our final nightbus (hopefully for a long time) was to Tulum to meet the guys. With our pigeon Spanish we managed to find out the bus was gonna be 15hours, but due to some problems on the road it ended up being 19hrs. Looking back, any delay was worth it as our accommodation here was great. We stayed in La Vita y Bella, in a great cabana, right beachside a gorgeous beach. The guys had been to the bus stop to meet us but gave up so we found them working on their tans on the beach. It's great to be travelling with them and we got caught up with a few cold coronas on the beach.
Just down the beach from the hotel are the Tulum Mayan ruins, which have a pretty fantastic location, looking out over the Caribbean Sea towards Cuba. There's a theory that the Spanish may have landed here. We swam, watched some Kite surfin and went out in Tulum town one night. We went for some traditional Mexican that night, where we didn't really know what we were getting and the guy had to leave to get us more beer. In the end the food was good and I tried some Habenero chillies which nearly took my head off, then we headed to a bar where girls drank for free, cheap night. Next stop Belize.
